Anahuac City Council weighs extending the goods in transit tax exemption as expanded by the Texas Legislature. The meeting, at 6 p.m. Monday, will review procedures to retain taxing authority for the next year. The Chambers County Commissioners Court will consider proclaiming the Tree of Angels Day at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the commission chambers.
About 35 volunteers from neighbors church and city hall gathered at East Human Avenue to help Leslie Benford and family complete a Baytown Habitat for Humanity house. Tasks included roof work shed painting and floor construction as Benford aims to move in mid January to a 1100 square foot three bedroom two bath home.
Baytown announced winners of its 45th annual Art Exhibition at a recent reception. Adult entries saw Susan Urban take first for Backyard Beauty, Maria Blanchard second for My Silver Line, and Luz Cantu third for Harvest Time. Photography debuts awarded in color, black and white, and city parks categories with Mike Whitten, Elizabeth Caldwell, Gary Erwin, Peter Cushman, and Jane Howard Lee among top finishers. Student divisions also recognized with several winners noted.
Joe V's Smart Shop plans a January 25 opening at 3500 Garth Road Baytown employing about 170 people. About 50 to 60 will come from the nearby H E B North Main location as the North Main store closes. Brandon Capetillo was elected mayor pro tem as Baytown City Council repeats a 2011 rotation, with six month terms. The council approved industrial district agreements funding the city over multiple years, and began a limited purpose annexation plan of about 1.5 square miles near Highway 99 and Kilgore Parkway.
