The Texas Water Quality Board seeks an answer and a financing plan as Harris County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1 meets to map next steps. The TWQB demands a firm plan for correcting the sewage plant overload and permit violations ahead of a Jan. 21 Austin appearance. Baytonian David A. Dudley, son of Mr and Mrs Y B Dudley of 501 E Sterling, receives the Bronze Star with device for valor. He holds two Army Commendation medals, a Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry Air Medal, a Purple Heart, a good conduct medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, and a presidential unit citation. Dudley served 12 months in Quang Tri with the Rangers of the Fifth Infantry 77th Armored Division. He is a Robert E Lee High School and Lee College graduate, and attended the University of Houston before enlisting.
Baytown traffic accidents run below last year with four fatalities this year compared to three last year. Statewide DPS figures show traffic deaths down about one percent to 4,092 this year from 3,113 last year. Through November Baytown logged 1,200 minor, 197 major accidents and 258 injuries versus 1,229 minor, 204 major and 281 injuries last year. December activity hints at a rebound as 23 accidents were reported in the first six days of December.
Robert G. Feinberg was re elected chairman of the Baytown Citizens Traffic Council at a Holiday Inn breakfast meeting. L. J. Weiler was re elected vice chairman and Mrs. Alice Henscey secretary treasurer. The council urged more signs at Decker and Park to show turn lanes and at Alexander Drive parking lots to prevent wrong way driving. Signs for no left turn or right turn must be posted at certain exits. The traffic committee will meet at 5 p.m. next.
Beach City Mayor Jimmy McClellan criticized Baytown council members for remarks during their meeting approving a lawsuit to block Beach City's 8000 acre Chambers County annexation. Leonard Stasney urged action, Don Hullum called for toughness, and McClellan offered a pointed response. Baytown's Bill Laughlin plans to file pleadings.
