Thousands packed Baytown downtown for the annual Christmas on Texas Avenue Festival hosted by the Historic Goose Creek Association. City Councilman Scott Sheley said the event raises awareness of downtown history and its continued appeal.
Two years after near dissolution Baytown's only homeless shelter reports a return to stability. A December 2004 debt of about 15000 led to payroll tax seizures and a resigning executive director for falsified statements. A community rally raised nearly 100000 with 50000 from Jay and Kay Eshbach, a new board and executive director Kathryn Higginbotham guided the recovery. Grants are pending from three foundations as the shelter enters 2006 needing 50000 to 75000 to cover early operating costs.
The Texas Commandery Naval Order of the United States held the 20th Pearl Harbor Day Ceremony on the bow of the Battleship Texas. Survivors were praised by Todd Fontenot as the color guard from the Houston Naval Sea Cadet Corps presented flags, a 21 gun salute by the First Battalion 23rd Marines, and the Houston Brass Band performed. A commemorative Air Force flyover and a wreath were presented while stories of the honored men were read and an excerpt from Roosevelt's war declaration was played.
