Baytown residents Edwina Haynes buys batteries while Terry Flood fills his gas tank in readiness for possible outages and evacuation. Shoppers load supplies with help from Lowe's staff as families check bottled water plywood and other essentials for the hurricane approach.
Baytown residents rush to fuel up and gather supplies ahead of potential Gustav impact. Dan Thomasson fills his 1963 gold Studebaker Hawk and searches for a home generator part while warning that losing power ruins food. Generators cost roughly 795 to 3000 dollars and must deliver 3500 watts with OHV engines. The Thomassons, veterans of Rita and Katrina, stick to their standard prep routine as Gustav looms.
Stacey Hogan notes a change in her son Shane Ehrlich since he joined the army in February. The 20 year old Baytown resident trained in Germany and will deploy to Iraq in November after completing Advanced Individual Training. He is married with a 17 month old daughter.
Seven year old Adam Novosad at Barbers Hill Elementary cannot pick lunch freely due to severe allergies to egg seafood dairy and nuts. His mother Hope recalls the start of the allergy journey after repeated illness and a Nestle Crunch incident. He now tolerates goat milk dairy soy and wheat but avoids most common foods. He loves fruit sorbet and still misses many foods. See Food on Page 3A.
