State senator questions costs tied to felony prostitution law
State Senator John Whitmire questions the logic of using felony charges for prostitution and the warehousing of women in state prisons. Attorney Ed Lieck argues for local treatment instead of state confinement, noting scarce community resources and jail backlogs. Texas currently has many nonviolent offenders in prison, prompting calls to expand local programs and adapt SAFPFs to aid prostitutes seeking reform.
