St Josephs will discontinue its kindergarten program this year. In other changes, St Josephs pupils will attend Mass at 8:15 a.m. before school, replacing the previous daily 4 p.m. Mass.

Mrs Jewel Holt celebrates granddaughter Tut zine Collings for a master of arts degree from Sam Houston State University and all A's. Holt, plus grandchildren Judy and Curtis Crawford, attended the commencement. Other notes mention Mrs Bessie Nesbit in room 529 at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, car inspection by Edward Cheatham, and various brief local vignettes.
Lee College Board of Regents will review a legal opinion from the Dallas firm McCain Parkhurst and Horton on the Texas Education Code HB 534 quorum rule. The firm says business must be transacted by a majority of all board members, not just a majority of those present. Regents previously passed resolutions seeking to keep transacting business by a majority of the quorum, not the full board, with the new code set to take effect Sept. 1.
Pamela Cawood from Rhodesia arrives in Georgia to live with the Red Phillips family at 204 Woodside Drive as an American Field Service exchange student. She will attend Robert E. Lee High School and joins her sister Clare and twin brother Pele in athletic and public service families. Pam has excelled in tennis and enjoys camping and fishing with her sports-loving relatives.

Baytown and Channelview Jaycees will sponsor two rest stops along Interstate 10 near the San Jacinto River Bridge during Labor Day weekend. The 72 hour event offers free coffee doughnuts soft drinks tea and crumpets and provides area highway information. Baytown stands eastbound and Channelview westbound 24 hours a day beginning Friday through Monday.
Four Dallas area wives press world opinion to help their missing husbands believed captive in North Vietnam. One man has been missing four years with no word to relatives. They cite inhuman treatment and seek relief for Capt. Jerry Allen Singleton, Capt. Robert D. Jeffrey, Capt. Grege Sfartness, and Maj. Michael N. Menthanon, all shot down in service.
Crosby School Attorney Joe Reynolds told Crosby residents that the Justice Department desegregation suit will be costly and require busing across the district. He said the department has vast funds and could be adversarial, but urged the board to stand firm with local backing to decide who runs the schools. Reynolds, connected with Houston schools, argues against federal takeover while noting attorney fees will be a major expense.
A $925.1 million tax package, mainly consumer levies, was approved by a House committee and sent to the floor for debate. Opponents call it a dead horse, arguing it fails to break the tax impasse from a previous special session. The plan would raise sales tax to 3.5 percent, expand taxes to repairs and autos, hike cigarette taxes, and add a 10 percent entertainment levy. Corporate taxes would rise with a franchise tax from 2.75 to 3.25 per 1000 in assets, then ease to 3 in 1972, amid sharp criticism from lawmakers like Rep. Jim Nugent and Rep. Smith.
