Highlands hosts a weekend of events led by the Miss Highlands Pageant at the Highlands Junior High School Auditorium with eight contestants. Judge criteria include interview, poise, appearance, talent and gown. prize bundle features 150 dollars plus a 50 dollar savings bond. A Friday street dance and Saturday parade with multiple bands and decorated floats follow, led by State Rep. Tony Palumbo as parade marshal.

Plastics factory destroyed in acetylene bottle fire

La Porte firefighters battled a blaze at Bay-Tex Plastics, 622 N Ninth, after an acetylene bottle leak.
