Final Vote Tally On Ammendments Told

Final statewide tallies from the Texas Election Bureau show the water plan defeated by 5,545 votes while welfare ceiling increases passed 427,747 to 233,016. Other measures including state bond interest, legislators pay, and student loan expansions also failed or passed with mixed margins.

Third Graders To Get Port's Coloring Book

Port approves 50-foot fixed span bridge spur plan

The Port of Houston backs a 50-foot fixed vertical span bridge over Cedar Bayou to connect Baytown and the U.S. Steel rill site, with unanimous support from Commissioner R. H. Pruett. The spur from near Holiday Inn on 146 to State 1105 in Chambers County will aid East Harris County access and may extend further east, aligning with state plans for expedited construction.

Garbage can snatched during tornado sighting on Ponderosa

Louis C. Harris of 4506 Ponderosa reported a garbage can vanished from a curb during a mid morning tornado sighting near Decker Drive and KWBA. Neighbor J C Harper of 4510 Ponderosa witnessed the can lift off the ground. Both men work in The Baytown Sun's composing room.

Five Buildings Involved In Baytown Condemnation Action

Baytown Urban Rehabilitation Board moved to condemn five vacant buildings at 816 Cedar Bayou Road 300 Stewart Street KH and 503 Oak Street and 300 Granville Street. First notices mailed. Board discussed $3000 bid to demolish 1209 Magnolia deemed too high and considered city employee demolition. Next meeting Sept 8 at city hall.

Twins from Channelview tour ends with European concerts

Dannie and Ronnie Stribble sons of Rev and Mrs Dan Stribble of First Baptist Channelview return August 19 from a month long Europe concert tour. They are part of a 60 voice chorus from East Texas Baptist College invited to sing with a Switzerland orchestra directed by Urs Schneider. The group leaves Shreveport July 17 and performs in 19 concerts across Switzerland Germany and England before coming home. Donnie and Ronnie are 1968 Channelview High School graduates and former A Cappella Choir Madrigal Singers members.

Two U S Men Killed In Cam Ranh Bay Hospital Raid

About 30 Viet Cong commandos breached the Cam Ranh Bay Army convalescent hospital at dawn, destroying wards and facilities. Two Americans were killed and 57 wounded. others were missing earlier but later reported safe. The attack, at a base long deemed highly secure, ended after less than 30 minutes with the raiders escaping.
