Final statewide tallies from the Texas Election Bureau show the water plan defeated by 5,545 votes while welfare ceiling increases passed 427,747 to 233,016. Other measures including state bond interest, legislators pay, and student loan expansions also failed or passed with mixed margins.
Chamber of Commerce Manager Dave Moore will present a comparison at the Baytown Chamber weekly meeting. He will contrast Baytown's buying income and income per family with Orange Killeen Port Arthur Grand Prairie Texas City Victoria Longview Denton Temple and Big Spring.
Round Town items list social visits and greetings from Mrs James Hall and the B J Gregory family at Garner State Park to Mrs Victoria Juneau visiting from New Orleans. Community events include a Mouse Lodge Hall dance and Memorial Baptist rehearsals. Honor roll, summer institute, CPA certification, and a 17 day free swimming program are noted with local names and dates.

Entries due by 9 p.m. August 13. animals must be disease free well groomed and halter broken or in showable condition.
Port Commissioner R H Pruett urged the Port Commission to extend a plan to buy 23000 copies of a Port of Houston coloring book to all third graders in Harris County outside Houston. The recommendation was changed and approved to distribute the coloring books countywide for the target age group.

Apollo 1 crew visit to the UN and ticker tape parade planned in New York. Diplomatic calls from US Britain and France push for Berlin tension de-escalation.
The Port of Houston backs a 50-foot fixed vertical span bridge over Cedar Bayou to connect Baytown and the U.S. Steel rill site, with unanimous support from Commissioner R. H. Pruett. The spur from near Holiday Inn on 146 to State 1105 in Chambers County will aid East Harris County access and may extend further east, aligning with state plans for expedited construction.
In Washington the Senate split over ABM safeguards with two key votes. Senator Clifford Case questions deployment while Senator Cooper remains skeptical Pentagon can deploy Safeguard soon. The measures would not remove the $759.1 million ABM funding in the $20 billion defense bill and maintain ongoing ABM research including a $120 million yearly Pentagon spending claim.
Louis C. Harris of 4506 Ponderosa reported a garbage can vanished from a curb during a mid morning tornado sighting near Decker Drive and KWBA. Neighbor J C Harper of 4510 Ponderosa witnessed the can lift off the ground. Both men work in The Baytown Sun's composing room.
The forecast shows clear to partly cloudy skies with a slight chance of thundershowers through Friday. Temperatures Thursday range from the lower 70s to mid 90s. Morgan's Point tides Friday show high at 3 19 p.m. and low at 12 43 a.m.
Baytown Urban Rehabilitation Board moved to condemn five vacant buildings at 816 Cedar Bayou Road 300 Stewart Street KH and 503 Oak Street and 300 Granville Street. First notices mailed. Board discussed $3000 bid to demolish 1209 Magnolia deemed too high and considered city employee demolition. Next meeting Sept 8 at city hall.
Dannie and Ronnie Stribble sons of Rev and Mrs Dan Stribble of First Baptist Channelview return August 19 from a month long Europe concert tour. They are part of a 60 voice chorus from East Texas Baptist College invited to sing with a Switzerland orchestra directed by Urs Schneider. The group leaves Shreveport July 17 and performs in 19 concerts across Switzerland Germany and England before coming home. Donnie and Ronnie are 1968 Channelview High School graduates and former A Cappella Choir Madrigal Singers members.
About 30 Viet Cong commandos breached the Cam Ranh Bay Army convalescent hospital at dawn, destroying wards and facilities. Two Americans were killed and 57 wounded. others were missing earlier but later reported safe. The attack, at a base long deemed highly secure, ended after less than 30 minutes with the raiders escaping.
