Texas House Approves New Tax Measure
The Texas House Revenue and Taxation Committee approved a 328.4 million tax bill of new consumer levies for full floor debate. It would raise sales tax to 34 percent, expand the base to many services, hike cigarette tax, phase out the chain store tax, and cut gross receipts tax for telephone firms. The measure takes effect next January and aims to balance the budget by Sept. 1.
