Mrs. Ruby Nosek of Houston reported the theft of a watch and billfold containing $100 and some change. Baytown Police said the watch was stolen from a home owned by Mrs. R. E. Whitakes on Ward Road.

The Baytown Board of Equalization opened public hearings at 9 am in the city hall council chamber on property assessments altered this tax year. Hearings run Wednesday through Friday with sessions 9 am to noon and 2 to 5 pm. Tax assessor-collector David Funderburk announced the schedule and noted taxpayers with increased valuations due to improvements, including annexed areas, may request to be heard by appointment.
A bill authorizing the U.S. Corps of Engineers to conduct a flood control and navigation survey of Cedar Bayou Stream was sent to the Senate. Introduced by Rep. Thomas of Houston, it aims to fund a study directed by the Galveston district office with an estimated three years and about $75,600 cost.
Mrs John F Kennedy gave birth to their third child at Otis Air Force Base base hospital. Johnson faces Patterson in the attorney general race while Gartin leads in the lieutenant governor contest. Meredith’s desegregation crisis looms in campaign rhetoric.
An informal Baytown City Council session took place Monday at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital to keep the mayor Dr. Lee Liggett near a patient. Rev. Edwin Sumamers, Grace Methodist pastor and hospital trustee, noted the hospital venue was chosen solely for this reason.

City Manager J B LeFevre said he has not quit and will stay in office until a proper transition to a new finance director occurs. He noted he would step down when the time is right and a competent replacement is found, denying reports of pressure-induced resignation.
Calf judging will be held in the arena during the Crosby Future Farmers of America Fair and Rodeo August 15-17.
