In Houston testimony Armando Acuna said he gave false information to officers about his son Robert Aaron Acuna missing on Nov 13, during the probe of the capital murders of James and Joyce Carroll. Acuna, 18, faces the death penalty or life with parole after 40 years if convicted. He testified he initially claimed to find his son’s abandoned truck on a dead end street after driving a sibling to school, a statement later contradicted in the investigation.
Baytown traffic supervisor Mike Kuykendall said James Street between North Main and North Commerce will close today for grade crossing improvements by Union Pacific. Work starts after the 9 30 a.m. train clears and should finish before the 4 p.m. train, with drivers urged to plan alternate routes. call the Public Works Department at 281-420-5300 for details.
Baytown Parks and Recreation Advisory Board approved higher rental rates for the Baytown Community Center and Wayne Gray Center after comparing local facilities in Deer Park Bellaire La Porte Georgetown Texas City and Missouri City. Non commercial rates rise to 11 22 50 hour and Baytown residents pay 50 hour non residents 60 hour for weekday auditorium use with weekend fees increasing to 75 and 85 respectively. The board toured the renovated 37 year old Center after the vote noting staff cleaning and setup costs as drivers of the increases.
The annual sales tax holiday starts today and runs through Sunday to aid back-to-school shopping for Texas families. Clothing and certain items will be exempt from sales taxes though some categories remain taxable. Check official listings to confirm which items are tax-free.
