McCullough Dies At 79 In Baytown

Oscar Sylvester McCullough 78, longtime Sun Oil Co. employee and Baytown church leader, died at 2 58 am Wednesday in a Baytown hospital. Funeral set for Friday at 9 30 am at Paul A Les funeral home with Rev M E McPhail officiating. Burial in Forest Park Cemetery Houston. He served a second term as Baytown corporation court judge before illness forced retirement. He lived in Baytown since 1922 after early moves amid oil booms and strikes with his wife. He was a Presbyterian elder since 1927 and clerk of the session.

Four Prisoners Free Jail With Whisky Heist

In Chickasha Oklahoma four prisoners including a murder suspect locked the jailer in solitary confinement, took 15 cases of confiscated whisky and fled in the jailer’s car. They threatened him with a knife and a .38 pistol and used the solitary confinement call to claim their escape. The group named Flora Mae Giddings, W R Garrett, Ivan C Allen, and Cornelius Cook amid a statewide alert.

Trinity Bridge Approaches Shelled To Improve All Weather Route

Texas State Highway Department workers dump crushed shell on the approaches to the Trinity and Oia 2nd Lost Bridges. Chambers County Judge Floyd Williams said the state would spread the shell if the county provided it. A crusher operates near the Trinity river as trucks supply material. Since the $2 million bridges opened, unpaved approaches were passable only in dry weather, and the Baytown to Anahuac drive shortened from 68 to 29 miles, boosting daily traffic.

Thieves Target Do It Yourself Car Kits and Parts

A spate of thefts hits city areas including two hubcaps from a Mary Cook property at 2228 New Jersey and two from Lloyd W. Mullins at 142y Myers. Car tools and a car missing parts, including a socket wrench set, were stolen from a Tour & Fair agency and a barn in West Baytown.

Gulf Squall Brings Spotty Rainfall To Baytown Area

A vestiges of a summer storm brought general rain to the Baytown area on Tuesday with variable moisture. The Baytown Refinery reported MF inch while Weather Observer Chester Rogers recorded 11 inch. streets flooded in several areas and McNair roads were undated during a heavy shower at about 5 p.m. Cloudy conditions reduced heat with a high near 89, and sporadic showers were forecast to continue into the next day as remnants of a storm from Louisiana move through East Texas. Winds accompanied the rains but no damage was reported.

July Dry in Baytown Trims Monthly Rainfall

Baytown saw a mostly dry July with 2.36 inches of rain over 31 days. Despite scattered showers in the latter half of the month, total rainfall was about 2.8 inches below normal, while Houston gauges reported around 12 inches. Year to date rainfall stands at 22.65 inches, roughly 0.48 inches below average for seven months.

Crosby service station owner Floyd A Meredith praised employee Tom Matthews for his calm actions during a Tuesday night armed robbery and kidnapping. Matthews was forced to surrender $38 from the cash register, later released in Beaumont after being driven there in a pickup. The case drew FBI involvement as investigators pursue the unidentified, educated gunman who also inquired about a neighboring house.
