Governor's Pardon for Slayer Stirs Legal Debate
CHICAGO AP. Governor Otto Kerner commuted Paul Crump’s death sentence to life imprisonment saying Crump, 32, is rehabilitated after nine years on death row. Legal experts question Kerner authority over parole as Crump could seek parole after 20 years under the new Illinois code. Crump, once a condemned killer in a 1953 Libby plant robbery slaying, expressed gratitude while supporters argue the clemency highlights evolving justice.
