Astros decline deadline deals amid wild card chase

Houston GM Tim Purpura said the Astros considered nearly every player without a no trade clause but found no deal that benefited the team short and long term. He denied a report that Maddux was traded to the Dodgers and stressed Brad Lidge remains a key asset despite recent rough outings. Lidge has given up seven homers this season and allowed a late two-run shot in a 7-6 loss to Arizona. Purpura noted multiple teams called about Lidge but no proposal matched the Astros’ valuation. He emphasized keeping Lidge to help return to form.
