Baytown City Council will review the proposed 2006 07 city budget in work sessions on August 3, 5:30 p.m. August 7, 5:30 p.m. and August 10, 4:30 p.m. in Council Chambers City Hall 2401 Market St A public hearing on the budget is set for August 24 at 6 40 p.m. in City Hall.
City officials face a 92.5 million dollar budget with a stable property tax rate of 73.7 cents per 100 valuation. Protests of property valuations have risen to over 210000, and certified rolls are not due until Sept 15. Council plans three budget discussions Aug 3, 7 and 10, with a public hearing Aug 24 ahead of adoption by Sept 27. The new fiscal year begins Oct 1.
Fred Pack Baytown public works director joined 239 other athletes in the inaugural Eastside Triathlon along Interstate 10 East. Pack teamed with Alo and Christi Lunda as The Rookies to finish second in the relay category in 1 hour 21 minutes 30 seconds. John Robertson of Friendswood set a course record at 1 hour 1 minute while planning for an Ironman next month. Robertson also runs Tri on the Run in Houston and expects the event to grow annually.
Three area college students returned from service in Africa, Russia, and southeast Asia with Go Now Missions. Denise Villarreal joined 50 volunteers in Penza Russia to run five summer camps for children across nine orphanages, teaching English and organizing games.
Houston-Galveston Area Council hosts a Tuesday gathering at 5 p.m. in the Baytown Community Center Pecan Room to gather input from Chambers and East Harris residents. The session aims to brainstorm ideas for a regional master plan coordinating transportation across urban and rural areas, with emphasis on special needs services as part of a 2003 state mandate. Patricia Waskowiak of HGAC said attendees may discuss access gaps, while the primary focus remains on special needs transport.
A 17 year old Baytown resident William Robert Skipper Burton died in a one car crash near Baytown Airport. The Harris County Sheriff's Department said Burton was driving a 2000 Ford Contour westbound on East Cedar Bayou Lynchburg Road at about 6 30 Saturday morning.
