District 128 representative Wayne Smith plans neighborhood block parties to meet residents he won’t have met since May. About 4,000 to 4,500 Baytown residents are expected to participate though events are down from 54 to 44 due to weather, mosquitoes, and timing. Major block party at McElroy Park will feature Baytown Police Chief Byron Jones and city officials. The Highlands Center and San Jacinto Center host an Ice Cream Social with Harris County officials. Police will try to staff all parties, with at least one officer per event, as volunteers from civic groups and Red Cross join neighborhood efforts. National Night Out is co-sponsored by Baytown PD with national organizers noting nationwide participation.
