Florida Race Marriage Laws To Be Reviewed By Court

Washington AP The Supreme Court agreed to rule on Florida laws barring interracial marriages and criminalizing cohabitation of unwed couples of different races. Dew ney McLaughlin, a Negro, and Connie Hoffman, a white woman, were jailed in Miami Beach in 1962 for living in the same room. The NAACP argued the convictions violated equal protection and due process. The case questions whether a state may prohibit interracial marriage inside its borders and then convict the same parties for unlawful cohabitation.
