The Baytown Symphony Orchestra concert Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the college Sports Arena will premiere John Kiefer’s new work Karankawa. The piece, by Lee College Guitar Ensemble director, recalls the Karankawa tribe once along the Texas Gulf Coast.
Calv in Carmona, 36, was captured by Baytown Police SWAT after a five hour standoff at a Highlands home in the April 1 murder of Jose Castillo Jr. Castillo, 33, died from a gunshot to the head amid a dispute on Pine Street. Witnesses accuse Carmona as the sole occupant armed with a handgun. Tear gas was used to force his surrender as family protested nearby. Authorities say the house lacked a working phone and several people emerged when police arrived. Read more on page 8A.
Local officials and stakeholders gathered at San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Park to discuss removing the USS Texas from the water. Plans include a graving dock to keep the 1912 battleship permanently afloat and allow hull maintenance, backed by a $16.1 million TxDOT grant and a broader monument expansion. U.S. Rep. Gene Green referenced ongoing support for preservation in this Houston area.
