Baytown City Council directed City Manager J B Le Fevre to bid hot mix asphalt topping for Defoe Rosewood Felton streets and four blocks of Harbor Drive from Market to West Main. Defoe prioritized. West Main surfacing bid process debated with Brown and Root. Council studied long term street maintenance and related regional subdivision plans while awaiting charter and election law discussions.
Dr. Sherman S. Shaffer, former head of Science and Math at UT Austin, has been named western representative for a new ACS office in San Francisco. The move links university educators and national groups to discuss general education and secondary science problems with ACS members in the western states.

Funeral services for Marine Cpl John Henry Wooster 20 of 125 Woods Ave will be held at Paul A Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Sopam Saturday. He died April 18 from injuries in an auto crash in Japan after serving in the Marine Corps and surviving a wartime accident. He is survived by his mother Mrs Annie Mae Wooster of Baytown three sisters and two brothers. Burial will follow at Woos y cemetery with arrangements by US Marines.
United States Steel and Bethlehem Steel were indicted along with allied firms by federal authorities on charges of conspiring to fix prices and rig sales in forged steel products. The action, announced by President Kennedy, involved estimates of a $100 million yearly market and affected stock market behavior as executives pledged to fight the charges in court.
Baytown bids for Carver Elementary cafeteria total 14 400 with George Ross the low bidder. Other Baytown bids range from 14 931 to 20 172. A Railway Express official spoke on closing plans. bond funds of 500 000 will finance cafeteria and new classrooms at Carver and Travis. Construction at Travis nears finish while Carver High gyms and classrooms proceed.
The Baytown school district outlines graduation requirements for 1962 63. Students in grades nine through twelve must complete 16 credits, with minimums in English math science social studies and physical education. Electives include world and American history languages economics and journalism.
