Pruning Disciplines for Early Summer Growth
NEA Garden Specialists Shela and Allan Swenson outline pruning basics for evergreens and flowering shrubs. Prune to fit natural growth, remove winter damage, and encourage bushier growth. Trim evergreens by removing top leaders and excess branches, and prune flowering shrubs after bloom to renew wood and vigor. Use sharp tools, avoid tearing bark, and shape trees to natural symmetry for lasting beauty.
