Seth H Mitchell was chosen president of the school board after two new trustees, Mrs. Karl W Opryshek and Robert C Wahrmund, were sworn in. Committee to study a plan to extend contracts for teachers clerical and secretarial staff was referred to the policy committee by a 8 3 vote at a Monday meeting as trustees debated changes to long standing policy. Supt. George J. Gi recommended year long contracts and the Lee College Board had already extended term limits for its teachers and other personnel. Several trustees objected saying more study was needed prior to any decision before the April 2 election.
The school board awarded a $283,400 contract to Span-Glass Inc. for improvements to Harlem Elementary School at McNair after 16 months of negotiations with Architect James A. Davis and the board building committee. The bid was the low bid opened Feb 9 at $457,000, above $410,000 in bond funds. negotiations trimmed $47,500 from the original bid, bringing total project cost to about $423,000 including fees and other costs. Bond funds on deposit since the bonds were sold nearly two years ago earned interest offsetting the higher cost. Changes included removing air covered walkways, reducing hardware allowances, omitting demolition of a four-classroom building, and omitting refinishing of cafeteria floors and a fence.
The Mayor's Conference on Libraries in Baytown follows the Governor's Conference held in Austin in March. It will be held at 7 30 p.m. Wednesday at Sterling Municipal Library. Special invitations have been extended to business, industrial and professional leaders, and the conference will be open to the public. Mrs James J Richardson, president of the Friends of Sterling Municipal Library, will introduce a panel of speakers who attended.
