City OKs $3 million for water and sewer projects

Baytown City Council approved three contracts and payments this week for water and sewer projects totaling $3,184,564. A 1 million gallon storage tower at Needlepoint was contracted for $1.7 million with completion in about a year. Final payment of $84,026.30 was approved for N & S Construction LP for the Texas Avenue lift station rehabilitation, funded by 1994 revenue bonds and certificates of obligation bonds from 1998 2000 and 2002 2004 for a $1.2 million project.

Balloon rope pulley method for stack inspection by Malcolm Murray

Malcolm Murray, a 22 year old mechanical engineer, recalls using a balloon and bosn chair method to inspect 180 foot stacks. The process involved balloons, pulleys, and manila rope to lift inspectors to stack tops, with repairs done via two man welders cages. Murray notes it saved crane costs and compares the experience to amusement rides. Murray is a retired Exxon Chemical engineer living in Baytown for 31 years.
