A Western Dance will be held Saturday night at the Knights of Columbus Hall located at 2600 W. Main. The event runs from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. with music by the B. J. Troupe Orchestra. The public is welcome.
The final sign-up for Optimist teenage baseball for boys ages 13 to 16 runs from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Optimist building on Market Street. Each boy must be accompanied by a parent.
A 7 40 p m Friday managers meeting will be at the Baytown Civic Center. Schedules will be issued and the season discussed. The Eva Maud Plumwood Garden Club plant exchange will run Saturday 10 a m to 4 p m at Mrs E L Wilsons 1900 McFarland. Visitors welcome. Dr Fred Schwartz speaks on Communism And Its Strategy To Conquer The USA at 7 30 p m Saturday at Holiday Inn West Loop South Houston. Chambers County Judge Oscar Neson speaks at 7 p m Monday at Baytown Optimist Club Ramada Tower. Fred McBride is program chairman.

U S Steel celebrated the official opening of its Texas Works in Baytown with a 150-guest tour of the 160-inch plate mill. Harry Spitz praised local hires, neighborly efforts, and water and air controls as production foresees a big Texas Southwest contribution. The mill, spanning 24 acres, produces plate 3-16 to 15 inches thick and up to 160 inches wide, serving Texas to Florida.
Baytown Police Sgt. Ronald W. Cooper, 36, has been named Kerrville police chief effective May 1, replacing Bill Brandon who resigns to enter ranching. Cooper, a Baytown veteran since 1962 and a Sam Houston State University student, brings extensive training and multiple certifications. He and his wife and three children will relocate to Kerrville by May 1.
E T Dicorcia of Humble Oil Baytown refinery announces leadership shifts. Joel R Lander moves from Shops and Planning to head Refinery Laboratory in Technical Division, replacing Maurice W Morgan who retires May 1. Wayne E Hanson becomes interim head of Technical Division Maintenance Engineering.
The district reports 123 students transferring in from other districts, 13 more than the prior year and 24 above 1968-69. About 60 come from Crosby District, with policies to avoid transfers by Crosby students seeking desegregated schools. Crosby adds 12 students, mostly for convenient transportation or valid reasons. Deer Park accounts for 21 transfers, up eight from last year, with Lynchburg area in question.
The 11th Baytown Youth Fair Rodeo drew a record opening crowd at North Main fairgrounds. Events feature 329 entrants in saddle bronc bull bareback tie-down calf roping steer wrestling and girls barrel racing. Notables include Ralph Fisher in acts, nightly calfscramble with 4-H clubs, and sponsors such as Lynchburg Feed Highland Rotary Club and Highlands Star. Series runs through Saturday with nightly performances at 8 p.m.
Wismer Distributing Co. of Baytown announced a new aluminum can reclamation center at 600 S. Main in a warehouse beside its offices. Anheuser-Busch will pay 10 cents per pound for cans, received Saturdays 9 am to noon, with $200 per ton value. Cans are shipped to Houston for shredding by Reynolds Aluminum Corp. The move aims to reduce litter and conserve resources.
Texas senators approved a two year state budget totaling 6.43 billion from all funds and 1.22 billion from general revenue, adding 694 million in tax burdens and supporting a corporate profits tax for Texas. The measure moves to the House amid anticipated conference committee action.
