In Austin sponsors urged quick action on a local option mixed drink bill aiming for an afternoon roll call to trigger May 18 elections. If approved, the measure would auto apply in 39 counties. Speaker Gus Mutscher said the two thirds vote was still uncertain while Rep. Dick McKissack of Dallas urged moving the bill this afternoon.

The council scheduled a May 4 runoff after April 6 results. Mayor race features incumbent Glen Walker versus Don H. Hallum who left District 3 for mayor. District 3 contenders are Jody Lander and Abe Simon, District 6 contenders Jim Williams and E Q Camp, and District 2 runoff pits David Evans against Charley O Walker.
