Houston Hosts National Democratic Convention 1928 Heavily Backed by Jesse H Jones
In June 1928 Houston hosted the National Democratic Convention after Jesse H Jones financed the bid with a $200,000 personal check and securing a 25,000 seat hall. The event marked the first presidential convention in the South since the Civil War, boosted Houston’s economy, and elevated the Rice Hotel as the social hub while Prohibition and Al Smith dominated political debate.
