Baytown Mayor Calvin Mundinger was named the fifth Fred Hartman Volunteer of the Year during the 61st Baytown Chamber of Commerce banquet. The award honors outstanding community service and is named after Fred Hartman, Baytown Sun publisher emeritus. Mundinger credited city staff and council members and noted the honor will be shared with fellow city staff. Previous winners include Carole Opryshek, Pete Alfaro, Bob Gillette, and Reggie Brewer.
Senate Republicans and Democrats reached a compromise on immigration reform offering a path to citizenship for about 11 million unlawful immigrants. Leaders John McCain and Edward Kennedy urged action, saying reform can no longer be delayed.
