Dave Moore of the Greater Baytown Chamber of Commerce told members at the noon luncheon that Baytown households surpass rivals in 10 000 annual income. A Wichita Falls tornado killed seven people and injured many, damaging about $2 million in property. The storm struck northwest Texas, hitting Sheppard Air Force Base and surrounding suburbs, with 240 homes damaged and hundreds homeless. Gov. Connally sent 100 National Guardsmen, and Red Cross shelters opened as utilities failed and communication hindered relief efforts. Thirteen year old Bill Lyles of Baytown and his family attended a special luncheon aboard the Savannah during a visit from Galveston. His model nuclear reactor earned second place in the junior physical science division of the Greater Houston Science Fair, drawing competitors from seven counties and attention from the Savannah crew. Lyles, son of Mr and Mrs Henry C Lyles, is an eighth grader at Baytown Junior High School guided by science teacher Verna Hartwto. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Sunday for George L Washington Mortis Jr., a former Baytonian, at Paul A. Lee Funeral Home. Rev. Basil Jones will officiate with Sampson Masonic Lodge of Highlands in charge of graveside rites at Cedar Crest Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Sampson Lodge members. honorary pallbearers include nephews. Mortis died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday in Land o’ Lakes, Florida. Surviving are his widow Rosa of Land o’ Lakes, two sons Grady and Clyde, four brothers Harvey Gene Harold Morris of Baytown and Julius Morris of Galveston, a sister Emily Ruth Woods of Houston, and two grandchildren Carissa and Kenneth Morris. He retired from Humble refinery Baytown in 1951 after 30 years in the utilities department.
