Five candidates vie for Baytown District 1 seat

Voters head to the polls Tuesday for Baytown City Council races with only District 1 contested among five candidates Pat Ball Knowles and C Dutch Pracek seek the District 1 seat. Ball is an insurance man Knowles a retired Southern Pacific employee and Pracek a builder and landlord Braswell and Fanestiel seek seats in other districts as incumbents. Polls open at 7 am and close at 7 pm with about 10 400 eligible voters. turnout may be light after a school trustee election dominated the prior week.

Baytown Students Dominate Regional Science Fair Victory

Baytown schools led the Greater Houston Regional Science Fair with six of the top 24 places and a clean sweep of the senior mathematics division. George Gramings won first in math and a $500 scholarship, while Robert E. Lee High School and Baytown Junior High score multiple top finishes. Baytown man dies saving boy at Lake Houston spillway

John Richard Fellers, 24, of Baytown, drowned Saturday while rescuing a 13-year-old Houston boy near the Lake Houston Dam spillway. Four New School Officials Elected In Joint Election

Four new school officials were chosen Saturday with two new trustees and two new Lee College Board of Regents members elected. Incumbents in both races were partly defeated as votes totaling 6,542 were canvassed, with Beavers and Shirey losing seats on the trustees and incumbents Jim Black and Warren Spivey defeated on the regents.

Two Tuesday elections in Chambers County seek incorporation of Mont Belvieu and Beach City in Tri-City Beach Road area. Oklahoma Fire Battle Continues in Southeast Oklahoma

Weary firefighters faced northerly winds and possible arson as fires swept timberlands in Southeast Oklahoma. In Southwest Arkansas, State Forester Fred Lang declared an emergency and called in the National Guard to aid the Dierks Camden timberlands. Dierks Forestry Inc. reported heavy losses as fires scorched about 19 000 acres on Sunday and 50 000 acres over four days, with extensive damage to small landholders.

Upset in Crosby Contest Incumbents Win Area Races

In three school district trust tee elections held Saturday in Mont Belvieu Crosby and La Porte only one incumbent was defeated. Newcomers Whalen Green and N G Burdin filled Mont Belvieu seats formerly held by retiring officials. Bob Bradley unseated Crosby incumbent A J Schmidt while Truman Reed defended Position 2 against Andrew Spence. In La Porte incumbents Gordon Burdick and D O Laird retained their seats. Total votes cast reached 301 at Barbers Hill and 272 in Barbers Hill School election with a second polling place at Core Community House.

Rioting Reaches Saigon as U S Troops Are Barred

In Saigon riots erupt across the capital as police seal off streets near the National Assembly and U S personnel areas.
