Two REL Seniors Win Optimist Club Scholarships

Ronald McCraw and Janice Sandy Land, seniors at Robert E. Lee High School, won Optimist Club scholarships totaling 2150 from about 100 applicants. Ronald, active in Pre Med Club and Latin societies, aims to be a doctor, while Sandy plans to major in mathematics and foreign languages and notes the growing computer field offers diverse opportunities.

Baytown Man Feffers Dies After River Boating Mishap

A Baytown man John Richard Fellers 24 of 907 Pleasant Drive drowned Saturday morning after a boating mishap in the San Jacinto River below Lake Houston dam. Another man Jesse Sack of Houston also drowned. Fellers survived by his wife Doris and daughter Heidi Marie 2 plus two brothers and two sisters and his parents.

Buff Coach Jack Spence Resigns After Surprise Move

Crosby Buffs head coach Jack Spence, entering his ninth year and one of the area's most successful, resigned Friday to pursue another coaching job. He offered his resignation to Superintendent Allison Kponce, effective Aug. 1. The board will review the notice at the April 18 meeting. Spence’s 1965 Buffs won the 27-A title and were set to face a tough 23-AA schedule next season with Humble, Nahuac, Hamshire-Farnett, Dayton, C. E. King, and Hardin-Jefferson.

Three Jobs Open Light City Vote Seen Tuesday

Baytown voters will go to the polls Tuesday to decide the outcome of a city council election lacking strong interest. The absence of a mayoral contest and a school trustee race have drawn attention away. 11 precincts await voters from 7 am to 7 pm. Three District 1 candidates contend while Dists 4 and 5 have unopposed incumbents.

300 Boats Race at Baytown for $41,000 Prize

More than 300 boats and champions will race for 41,000 in the first modified outboard boat event of the season at Baytown Boat Club Park on the San Jacinto River near Highlands. Eleven heats per day on a one mile course with five laps per heat. Admission 31 for adults, under 12 free. Warmups at 9 a.m. Races start 1 p.m. Eddie Huron will offer fried chicken plates for 1 and other concessions available.

Voter Turnout Trails Last Year in School Board and Regents Race

By noon only 1,500 votes were recorded in 10 of 14 precincts in the school district trustee and Lee College regent election, far below the 2,272 midmorning tally a year ago. Wooster Lions Light Bulb Sale Aids Civic Projects

The Wooster Lions Club announces its annual light bulb sale from April 15 to 23 across Wooster and nearby areas. Proceeds support Boy Scouts, Cerebral Palsy Center, Lighthouse for the Blind, Center for the Blind, and a Kerrville camp, plus a Robt. E. McCullough Named Administrative Manager at Humble Baytown Refinery

G B McCullough, long time Humble Oil executive, becomes administrative manager at the Baytown Refinery after serving in the employee relations and salary groups.
