Foot bridge repair ordered on West Sheridan street
At the Friday council meeting the street commissioner was instructed to immediately fix the foot bridge over Spring branch on West Sheridan street. Ed Huff, prescription clerk at Morrow Drug Company's, left for Parsons, Kansas for a similar post. Arthur Carney, returning from Oklahoma City, joined the Morrow Drug Company as a potential assistant. Elizabeth Ervin, aged and respected, died at her home in the Quapaw reserve. funeral services were held and interment at Baxter cemetery. J C Heskett went to Muscogee to seek a mining lease near land owned by Wm Hont, who is jailed there. The area lies near current strikes south of town. The Evening Courier, Columbus, new daily, attracts progressive merchants. Willard Richart edits and publishes, Asa Lea is city editor, Rock salt paper weight gifted by Jim Chew from Lyons, Kansas. Rock salt is mined at Lyons similar to Galena's mining.

Debate at city opera house on labor union issue
Miss Mattie Sneleon went to Columbus Saturday and remained until after the funeral of Walter Reed killed in the powder mill explosion last Saturday. On Thursday evening March 21 the colored debating clubs of Joplin and Baxter debate at the opera house on the resolution that labor unions and associations are beneficial with Baxter taking the negative.

Frisco Buys Land for Division Near Depot
The Frisco railroad company purchased Mrs. Meyerding's land on which her eating house stood near the passenger depot. In addition to the cash, she secures a five year lease on enough ground for her building at the depot south end. Rumor says the company plans a division here and will soon start ground breaking for switches and round houses.

Republicans Nominate In City Hall Caucus Results
Republicans held a ward by ward nomination session at city hall. In second ward A T Gaba and O M Youse were nominated for councilman with Youse winning 11 to 4. C A Willis was named to the board of education. In first ward A D C Harvey and J J Fridley were nominated for councilman and education member respectively. No nominations in third ward due to low turnout. candidates to be nominated by petition. The Missouri Pacific plans a new line from Folsom to Baxter Springs via Columbia and Joplin linking to Chetopa, to serve southeastern Kansas and the hay trade, with Columbus deemed the feasible route.
