Flag ceremony crowns Baxter Springs war effort with new 96 foot staff

Miss Zella Wright raised the U S flag atop a 96 foot flag staff in Baxter Springs Library Park amid a large crowd. A 12 by 18 foot flag will arrive soon to fly daily during the war. The event featured singing of America and The Star Spangled Banner and speakers Rev J R Browne and Rev J H Hoppingarner.

Business Lot Sold for New Brick Building in Baxter Springs

Two lots on South Military Street, plots 9 and 10 in Brewsters second addition, sold for 5000 dollars to Dr. A. O. Blair of Pittsburg Kansas by J. W. Grantham and E. J. Pratt. A brick building is planned. Dr. Blair is a noted Pittsburg investor driving outside capital into Baxter Springs. L. G. Meyerding named Frisco railroad watch inspector for Baxter Springs and Miami territory. starting June 1 he tours every two weeks and inspects section men every three months.

Children’s Day Program at Methodist Church Next Sunday

A Sunday morning program at the Methodist church includes processional singing, primary school solos, a recitation, and a symposium on Education. The program features vocal solos by Derek Edington and Chester Covey, readings by Nellie Brown, and a Junior Offering to aid students. Mrs A H Allen Dies After Long Life Of Service

Mrs A H Allen died at her North Main Street home on May 24 following a long life spanning Hannibal Center New York birth and a move to Kansas in 1879. She leaves husband A H Allen two sons Bert Pittsburg Kansas and Fred Trinidad Colorado and four daughters Mabel Georgie Julia and Lucile all of this city. Funeral services were held at the home on May 26.

Concrete road routes discussed by Baxter Springs committee

The Baxter Springs and Galena committees on concrete roads reviewed three proposed routes for a state highway. Routes start in Galena, pass through Riverton and Lowell, then head to Baxter Springs and on to Picher with variations via Black Jack, Onaha, and Blue Mound areas. Council Plans Action On Sewer Water Proposition

Mayor Wright told News staff the council will meet the water plant owner around the 18th to discuss city needs. If terms aren’t reached, steps toward a municipal plant will be taken. Officials favor settling water first before sewer work, with enforcement of a new sanitary ordinance unavoidable within months.

Hockerville grows rapidly as L. C. Hocker loans land for housing. By Monday 1, nine more houses were contracted. Mining expansions at Lucky One on the Oklahoma side and O. K. on the Kansas side drive a 600 ton and a 1000 ton mill, with shafts down and ore encountered. H. D. Skelton holds the first lease on the Hocker lands amid expanding mining activity.

Wagon Wreck at South Street Crossing by Frisco Engine

A Frisco freight engine struck and demolished a covered wagon at the South street crossing by Murdock Hardware. The wagon carried a family of movers. they escaped harm as the wagon was nearly across. Both rear wheels broke. city had deemed the crossing dangerous and sought a watchman, but the railroad is short of staff.

A sunseoney was served on Walter G Harris of Joplin to appear in Oklahoma territory. Wakeman alleges a May deadline and a forfeiture action tied to land dealings. Harris reportedly began drilling on May 28 and Wakeman sought to halt the activity the following day but his voice went unheard.

Death of Former Baxter Buy Officer Jensen

Ruben H. Jensen assistant manager of Long-Bell Lumber received a telegram announcing the death of a former Baxter Buy officer who had recently joined the army. He died in Syracuse New York at 18 years old. He served in El Paso Texas and was later sent to New York. The body will be shipped to Abilene Kansas for burial. Ruben left for his home in Abilene Monday.

Baxter Women Robbed on Military Street Outside Vinegar Hill Office

Mrs Mary Thomas and Mrs Elvina Sprice were robbed of 14 dollars last Friday night at 10 o clock on Military street in front of the Vinegar Hill Zine Co office. They had closed their restaurant and were walking home when a purse was snatched. The culprits were not identified.

Little Change to Expand Southward

The W E McClure property was bought by Catholics for 4500 last week. The house will be moved and converted into a hospital while a model church will rise on the current site. E Gradinger of Pittsburg Kansas an Standard Oil representative visited Baxter Springs to arrange a new station site. The move aims to expand local business, with plans dating back two years and continuing efforts to attract the oil firm.
