Maine senator race hints at 1928 challenge from Hale ally
A Maine state request for loyalty to Senator Hale, and a 1928 bid by an ally to block a Hale challenge, surfaced after Governor Brewster’s gain in the September election. The letter alleged Republican friends would back Brewster if he pledged not to oppose Hale in the next primary, a demand Brewster denounced as improper political blackmail. The episode sparked debate on party loyalty and the strength of Republican support in Augusta and Portland districts.
