Bath celebrated Sumner Sewall's election as Maine governor with a large public rally in the park. Citizens praised his war service, Senate presidency, and trusted leadership, while his mother and wife stood by him as sponsor figures in a statewide campaign.
As autumn approaches, millions of sportsmen gear up for the hunting season. U S hunters spent about 12.6 million dollars on hunting licenses in 1938, and plans for the coming season are urged.
Reports from authoritative hunting sources indicate abundant game due to conservation policies. City Marshal Joseph Butler, now Captain of Battery D Coast Artillery, will command his unit in Federal service and be off duty for a period. He improved Bath's police protection and innovations in the department.
The Sagadahoc Registry of Deeds shows active transfers over the past two weeks. Entries include Bath purchases on Washington and Center streets, North Bath parcels, Milan Street sites, Meadow Way lots, Bowdeinham, and other local streets. transfers involve multiple buyers and sellers such as Cornish Worrey Lowell Hatch Estabrooks Free man and others, with many land and building deeds noted across Bath Albion Topsham and Woolwich communities.
Members of Battery D 240th C A inducted into the regular army at 11 30 a m Monday at the State Armory by Major Henry V Lins U S A of Portland and quartered at the Armory until Sunday Sept 22 will have ice cream for dessert for at least one meal Wise man Farms local branch is furnishing the ice cream for one mess during the week.
At a Tuesday meeting of the W CTU in the Church of the Nazarene it was decided to observe Temperance and Missions Day on September 24. Mrs. Lillian Mayo will host with helpers Mrs. Nella Stover Miss Carrie Trott Mrs. Mabel Paquet and Miss Lois Palmer serving refreshments after the social hour. Invitations go to local missionary societies. The State convention will be held at Hammond Street Congregational church Bangor September 25 26 27.
Willis Hunt the wealthy boat builder proposed to Carole Landis the leading lady of Mystery Sea Raider between scenes of that film. They eloped to Nevada after her last day’s work. The scene followed a weekend visit by the Vails Pettengill Cof fin and Beals at various Massachusetts and Sagadahoc addresses with Robinhood leisure.
Summer residents linger at Small Point Maine as clubs close for autumn. Many families plan return trips to New York Washington and Massachusetts with students heading to schools in Southboro Potts Town Catonsville and Dartmouth. A new fall float is being built near Alliquippa for harbor racing among small boats.
Dr. Virginia C. Hamilton hosted a noon luncheon at 900 Washington Street for Maine women physicians to discuss their role in National Defense. A Round Table followed with Dr. Lucinda B. Hatch and Dr. Barbara Hunt opening the discussion. attendees included Drs Hatch, Hunt, Whittier, O Connell-Desaulmiers, Boring Thomas, and Stickney.
Several Brunswick merchants will keep stores open Friday evenings till nine as an experiment beginning this week. Bath Iron Works payrolls have local spending power, and merchants expect good turnout and may extend Friday hours if the public responds. Saturday evenings will continue to be open as well.
Warren Bar who employed in the electoral department of the Bath Iron Works and Eugene Rice son of Mr and Mrs Nelson Rice of Sagadahoc Ferry passed the weekend in Berlin New Hampshire with Mr Bartletts parents Mr and Mrs Harry Bartlett
Andrew Zogopoulos 52, chef at Lobster Claw on Center Street, sent his week’s $25 to President Roosevelt for the National Defense Fund. He served in the Balkan War of 1912-13 and World War I, wounded twice in the Balkan conflict and once in WWI. He has lived in Bath five years after coming from Lewiston.
Lions club reopened Wednesday with a dinner at Sedgwick. President Arthur Bowker led plans for welcome and departure signs on the State highway, cane distribution to the blind, a driving school for high school pupils, and a shared driving course with Rockland High School. Brian M. Jewett led the program committee as members anticipate vigorous fall and winter activities.
In Suffolk a widow who learned in June that Lance Corporal H. G. Burgess of the Grenadier Guards had died on May 23 faced upheaval with two children. A man, bearing a Nazi tunic with a ripped swastika, arrived at her mother’s home claiming Burgess. The grenadier revealed himself and demanded his clothes after shedding the German attire.
Seven Bath residents and one Woolwich resident registered in the 1944 class at the University of Maine. The Bath entrants include Edward G. Atkinson Harold S Avery Clare K Fulton Edward B Hamblett Barbara W Hopkins Richard M Packard Willig ran rs Arthur Sewall. From Woolwich Sally Jean Ryan and Eleanor Carter are noted, with Carter described as a Day's Ferry resident. Carter is listed as a Bath Memorial hospital patient.
Richard Steen and his parents spent a summer at Five Islands. While cruising between Five Islands and Malden Island in a 12 foot row boat a shark bit off the propeller shaft and muffler from the outboard motor. Blood covered the water as the shark grabbed the gear and disappeared. Steen narrowly kept his balance and returned to shore safely.
Reports say 160 Bowdoin students have enrolled in a college and federal sponsored flying instruction program at the West Bath base on New Meadows Lake. About 20 are finishing the first course. a second starts after college opens. Winter ski landings are planned. expansion of the program appears likely. Officials may relax education requirements to include high school graduates.
Investigation found a can once holding fire extinguisher solution later reused for lubricating oil. Management informed, drastic steps issued to destroy such cans, all plant extinguishers retested, and the issue discussed at the April meeting of the B I W Fire Department. No other improper solutions reported.
Mail and telegrams pour in for Senator Sewall after a notable victory. Oliver, along with Maine’s delegation except one, personally phoned congratulations in Washington. A flood of messages arrives from business and professional leaders, with clerks compiling a long acknowledgment list.
