Edward L. Kennedy of New York, 49, crashed a car into a tree near Wiscasset while police pursued a lead that he might be Al Capone era figure Alvan Karpis. Officials questioned him about Bremer kidnap ties but Kennedy produced a license and claimed innocence, stating two companions fled the scene and he was not driving. He faced a possible charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated as investigators checked whether he was connected to a New York warrant.
