Massachusetts wood duck nesting program expands with boxes

The wood duck, hailed as America's most beautiful waterfowl, gains attention from a state project by the Massachusetts bureau of wildlife research and management. The program distributes several thousand hollow-box nesting crates to sportsmen and landowners to offset a short supply of hollow trees. Two thousand personnel will install boxes on poles six feet above water and 15 to 20 feet from shore. Trees attract predators and non duck species, so boxes reduce risk and increase nesting success.

Wood Fire Retardants and Coatings Summary

NFPA publications describe reducing wood combustibility by impregnation with fire retardants or applying fire retardant coatings. Ammonium phosphate and ammonium sulfate are used for interior work, along with ammonium chloride, sodium borate, and zinc chloride. Many chemicals are water soluble and may wash away, especially on exterior surfaces or washed floors. Coatings over wood can also provide ignition and flame spread protection.
