The government ran a new high deficit of 9.39 billion dollars for the year ended June 30, pushing the national debt to 266.12 billion. Senator Byrd predicts hitting the debt ceiling in six months, with a request to Congress for a higher limit as a Christmas deadline. Senator George of Georgia doubts the Senate will approve the move.

Judge Gar diner R. Deering presided over a large docket in Muncipal Court Monday with multiple drunken driving cases. Larry St Cyr pleaded guilty to drunken driving and driving on a suspended license, facing fines and possible jail time. Leonard M Osnoe also pled guilty to drunken driving after a Topsham stop, while others admitted speeding or related infractions with fines ranging from ten to fifty dollars and varying costs or jail options. Three intoxication cases saw guilty pleas and fines or jail terms.
Friday morning session of Municipal Court featured driving related charges. Hugh Semple of Framingham paid 5 dollars and 5.70 in costs after pleading guilty to running a red light on Leeman highway. Edgar L. Stinson of Bath pleaded guilty to leaving the scene after his car damaged a fence on George Wallace property, paying 25 dollars and 5.70 in costs. Robert J. Tabor of Bath was found guilty of speeding after pleading not guilty, paying 10 dollars and 8.70 in costs. Donat Morin of Brunswick paid 5 dollars and 4.70 in costs for failing to stop at a stop sign in Richmond. Perley E. Truman of Freeport paid 10 dollars and 11.30 in costs for throwing broken glass on Maine street in Richmond. A Bath man charged with intoxication received a 30 day jail sentence in Kennebec county.
The school department urges swift registrations with only two days remaining. All new students across all grades must register, including pre primary entrants and high school pupils. By Wednesday noon 248 beginners had signed up, with expectations of reaching at least 260.

Judge Gardiner R. Deering of Bath and Court Recorder Arthur D. Dolloff of Topsham attended the Maine Association of Municipal Court Judges and Recorders meeting in Hallowell. The group voted to continue studying a district court system and to examine ways to reduce court costs. Edmund C. Carey of Livermore Falls was elected president with vice presidents Louis Bernstein, Adrian Cote, and Frank E. Southard Jr. reelected. L. Smith Augusta named secretary.
Brunswick district official cites a planned expansion of local dial telephone service by 1954. The project involves property acquisition and conversion to a dial exchange, with operators and toll calls expected to shift to the new system as part of Brunswick’s communications upgrade.
Wendall Doll 17 of Brunswick and Charles 17 of ee were arraigned on theft of gasoline charges. Both received 60 day sentences. Doll had suspended sentence on probation for 11 months as a first offender. Gas was stolen from a shovel dumped at a feldspar waste site near Tedford road. Recent thefts prompted a sheriff's report after a party followed a car to the pit and alerted authorities.
The report notes tobacco growing rapidly growing into a major industry in New England with about 61 square miles of farms in Connecticut and Massachusetts now under cultivation. It recalls Winfield W. Morse of Winnegamish who grew the weed for years, dried it in an attic, and found it satisfactory for his pipe.
