Mrs Mabel Paquet hosted the White Ribboners Women s Christian Temperance Union meeting on Russell street with large attendance. Devotions were led by Mrs Elizabeth Trott and prayer by Mrs Lila Place. Officers elected for the year include Gladys Farley president Theresa Hill vice president Nella Stover recording secretary Prudence Dunlap corresponding secretary Sarah Coombs treasurer. Ice cream cake and cookies were served. The next meeting is Sept 8 at Miss Sarah Coombs 47 Corliss street.
Mrs. Victor Lonn was guest of honor at a surprise stork shower hosted at the home of Mrs. Roy Lutz Jr Hyde Park Terrace. Gifts were arranged around a baby’s folding car bed and guests enjoyed buffet food after the gift opening. High attendance included Mrs. Harold Safford and many Lonn and Larrabee relatives.
Mrs. Duveen Bryant Dews formerly of Bath is named English teacher and girls' athletic coach at Gorham High School announced by Superintendent Brackett. A Morse 1947 and UMaine 1951 graduate, she earlier coached at Pennell Institute Gray and N. H. Fay Dexter and worked in UMaine psychology. Her husband Reginald Dews attends Gorham State Teachers College. they reside in Gorham.
Three traffic violation cases were heard in municipal court before Judge Gardi ner Deering. Richard F. Webster of Cincinnati pleaded guilty to speeding 60 in a 45 zone on Route 128 at Woolwich and was fined $10 plus $7.50 costs. Sidney F. Cheney of South Portland pleaded guilty to failing to stop for a red light at Leeman Highway and Middle Street, paying $5 fine plus $5.70 costs. Conrad J. Sirois of Water Street pleaded guilty to failing to stop for a red light, paying $5 fine plus $5.70 costs. Ernest Hatch and son Nelson, Grace Hatch, and Robert Beaucage were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs John Williams in Dummer Street.
A Maine State Police report shows 91 highway fatalities in the first seven months of 1953, the fifth highest seven month toll in state history. Six drivers, six passengers, and five pedestrians died in July, with rural crashes dominating and excessive speed named the primary cause.
Members of Company B 703rd Gun Battalion AAA Armory on Lincoln street arrived Saturday from South Well field Massachusetts where two weeks of training ended. Letters from Bath relatives report experiences including a hurricane scare at Cape Cod with tents tied down and orders to pack up. Bath men include 1st Lieut McDorr Set Harvey Rowe Harold Carter and privates Richard Le Moine Merton Witham.
Employees of the West Bath Bakelite plant a division of Union Carbide & Carbon Corp and their families were treated to a clambake on the plant grounds by the New Meadows river. The event marked more than a year without a lost time accident at the plant. Speakers included Glenn L. Pitzer from New York and Miss Marton Martin Maine Commissioner of Labor. Dorothy Thompson, daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred H Thompson Jr entered Memorial hospital as a surgical patient.
Bath and West Bath sent more than 80 members to the Three-Quarter Century Club event in Lewiston where about 1500 seniors gathered from across Maine. The trip featured bus and car arrivals, remarks by Governor Cross and honors for centenarian James W. Cummings, 101, and other long-lived attendees.
The Twin County Extension association schedules its annual demonstration day on Thursday starting at 10 a.m. in the Bowdoinham area. Howard F. Knight chairs the committee. Visitors will tour a vegetable operation and packaging gear, Kennebec Rose Gardens, and end with a chicken barbecue in Richmond Village. Women will hold an afternoon meeting with a noted speaker while men visit a dairy farm highlighting a trench silo, Quonset storage, homemade barn, cattle herd, and machinery.
Between three and four hundred youngsters from city playgrounds enjoyed their annual outing at Thomas Point in Brunswick. They rode to the beach by bus and took part in morning games and contests. At noon steamed clams hot dogs and drinks were served. Prizes were awarded in the afternoon by Recreation Director Ed J. McMann.
Fourteen Bath girls partook in a full day session at Foster Point led by Mrs. Kenneth Francisco and Mrs. William Mennealy. Sponsored by Bath Garden Club, the event included a bird observations talk, a picnic, and return to Bath after studying feeding stations and bird habits. Attendees listed.
The Lincoln County Orchestra presents its second annual Pop Concert at Lakehurst Damariscotta Friday evening August 28. Directed by Ernest P. Lippmann the group draws players within 30 miles and aims for higher musical standards. Proceeds support the annual scholarship. advance reservations available through Mrs. Alphonse J. Skelton or any orchestra member.
In Topsham session Judge Gardiner R. Deering heard three motor vehicle charges. Richard P. Ricles of Brighton pled guilty to speeding 75 in a 45 zone on Route 196 and paid $17.40. Philip H. Parent of Hallowell pleaded innocent to speeding 60 in a 40 zone on Route 201 but was found guilty and paid $20.40 in fines and costs. Valere Boulet of Le?iston entered nolo contendre to failing to turn reasonably to the right of the middle of the highway on Route 196 and was discharged with $19.18 costs.
Mr and Mrs James McGuiggan hosted a shore dinner at Merrymeeting Bay for James S Lord 80th birthday. Attending were family and friends from Bath Boothbay Harbor and Flushing including Edward and Arthur MacDonald Leroy Lord James McGuiggan Daniel MacDonald Alfred Oxton Cedric French Warren Iggins Harold Stover and Lloyd Kelley.
The Maine Department of Health and Welfare Bureau of Health reports for the week ending August 15 eight mumps cases in Sagadahoc County. Four are in Bath, one in Bowdoinham, and three in Richmond.
Robert Gile son of Mr and Mrs Gilchrist of 16 Beacon street plans to teach physics and biology in a Woodstock boarding school near the Himalayas. A Morse High graduate class of ’43 and University of Maine ’49, he has taught at Waldoboro High. He and family attend missionary training in Meadville then move to Orono and Hartford for seminary before sailing to India for a teaching post.
Mrs. Lloyd Kelley and Mrs. Daniel MacDonald hosted a stork shower at 60 Bedford Street in Flushing for Mrs. Robert Brunelle. Guests included Mrs. Joseph Long, Mrs. Flora Robbins, Mrs. Ed ward McGuiggan, Mrs. Maurice Libby, and Miss Jeannine Bisson among others with gifts sent by Mrs. Frank Allegrin and Mrs. William Bruce.
City officials heard Football Field Recreation Director Edward J. McMann outline urgent field fixes at the new site. He cited a large hole, driveway work, field layout by an engineer, and a gravel walk needing funding the council declined to provide, warning of safety risks for spectators. The Davenport Trustees may cover the city clock tower repairs after the council’s August vote, with local support riding on Elm street church tower maintenance.

Police Chief Frank Monen warns violators who did not follow parking letters to expect court dates starting August 26. The notice urges compliance as Moriarty cites delinquency in this matter. Florence Fullerton, daughter of Cecil and Mrs Fullerton, returns from Summer Youth Music School in Durham New Hampshire and will enter Morse High School's senior year in September.
EOF AT RID PARK report notes a clambake hosted by the Bath Home Extension Service and their husbands near the beach. Darkness fell as the gathering began to depart, with attendees including Mrs. Lindsey Daup and numerous couples led by Mr. and Mrs. Howard and others.
The Auburn Lewiston Kiwanis sponsor the Twin County 4-H Open Air Market on Saturday August 29 from 9 30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the C F Co Center Street Auburn with 4 H boys and girls displaying produce home cooked foods canning woodworks poultry products and other items. County Club Agent Paul Dowe notes most participants have garden projects and high quality cannennsled items will be sold. The Kiwanis will present a banner to the winning 4 H exhibit and all 4 H clubs are invited to attend. Merchandise goes on sale at 9 30 a.m. sharp.
A Fullerton window display promotes the U S Marine Band to appear at the high school on Thursday October 8 led by Lt Col F Santelmann. The event supports the Junior Legion Drum and Bugle Corps as part of local community activities. Mr and Mrs Ammon Soule of Monsey bricksburg Virginia visit their son Sgt Richard Soule and wife Jean Caton Bath with their son Robert joining from a long stay.
