Truk, once the feared Japanese bastion in the Pacific, was bombed into virtual noth ingness. Surrounded by American advances in the Marianas, Marshalls, and Carolines, the atoll fortress was neutralized by air power. From its February 1944 Pearl Harbor strike and daily Liberator bombardments, it declined to a minor target by November when Saipan-based B 29s took over.
