Sgt Arnold Burke and family visit Bath, with Burke returning to duty after 19 months overseas. Pvt Harry Salmon joins the Convalescent Hospital at Plattsburg. Albert E Rea Sr. discharged after 42 months service with coastal gunboat duty. John A McCarthy promoted to sergeant from Camp Butner. Lt Wesley Simpson to return home from Germany. Sgt Robert Hamblett expects later discharge from Italy. Lt Raymond Reed promoted to lieutenant commander as of Oct 1. Sgt Frederick Libby discharged after 19 months overseas. Harold W Travis served aboard USS Guam in the campaign at Jinsen Korea. Earl E Maines discharged after 40 months duty with European theater service.
S/Sgt. Edward Brown Jr. wife Mrs. Edward Brown Jr. of 50 Crawford Drive wins the right to wear the Boots and Wings of the United States Army Paratroops after four weeks of jump training including five jumps, the last a night tactical jump. Parachute School training is described as a developing war science with emphasis on airborne operations.
S/Sgt. Earl C Higgins of Woolwich clears Grenier Field and awaits honorable discharge after nearly three years in the RAF as an armor gunner. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific theatre earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. He plans to resume work as a sheet metal maker. Other local veterans head home or begin new duties from Hawaii to Fort Bliss Texas with furloughs and discharges.
Tech. Sgt. Donald Beals USAAF of Chicago has returned to Brunswick to visit his mother Mrs. Frank Beals after weekends with relatives in Bath. He recently received discharge after three years in Italy. Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. Reardon celebrated their 30th anniversary and left for Rye New Hampshire and Boston with their son Lt. J Kenneth Reardon USMS returning to New York. Pvt. Reardon will report to a Butler Pennsylvania hospital for a two month lip reading course and a hearing aid before discharge. Mr. and Mrs. Willard E. Watson of Washington Street also noted.
The Dunton family reports Raymond in Okinawa is safe and returning to Pedro California. Pvt Betty Dunton leaves Quantico for duties after an eight day furlough with her parents Ralph and Mrs. Dunton and uncle and aunt William and Mrs. Edgett. They traveled from Edgett street home to Moosehead Lake region Millinocket Calais and Kokadjo encountering three inches of snow on the Great Northern Paper Co. road. The trip featured foliage and partridge, with no deer sighted.
Lieut Ruth King USA RN returns Wednesday evening from a Charleston hospital after months of illness following wartime service. She served on a hospital ship throughout the war and saw significant action. She is daughter of Howard E King of Elsinore Avenue.
Sgt. Frederick A. Libby of Parker Head is discharged from the Army at Westover Field under the point system. Mrs. Richard F. Coles nee Margaret Tournlotte travels to Mansfield Pa to await her husband returning from service with the U S N attached to the Halsey Fleet in the Pacific.
Pvt Paul Tourtillotte U S A A F reports back to Patterson Field Dayton after a three day leave spent with his mother Mrs Ethel Tourtillotte Center street. Mrs Arthur W Brown of Montreal and Sgt George A Pickle RC A of Toronto arrive for a month's visit with the former's daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs Paul D Moore 1168 Washington street. Sgt Pickle recently returned from six years overseas service and received an honorable discharge. This is his first visit to the states and he would like to make it his permanent home praising Maine and its rugged scenery.
Installation of Officers of Sacred Heart Circle Daughters of Isabella held at eight in the Knights of Columbus hall. State regent Arlene LaTourneau installed officers including Louise Arsenault regent and Beatrice Arsenault first guide. The event featured remarks on duties and the Victory Loan Drive, with remarks by Adrine Bureau and Pvt Elizabeth Dunton USMC. Delegations from nearby circles attended and refreshments followed.
Mrs George Burns visited her home on Noble avenue last week, recording a social call that highlights neighborhood activity and local residents in daily life.
Alvin Brewers large sardine boat Manela, burned and scuttled at her mooring two weeks ago, has been salvaged and towed to Sample Bros shipyard in Boothbay Harbor for repairs. The hull is charred. the superstructure destroyed, but the marine engine and hoisting gear survive for reuse. Estimated three months and several thousand dollars to restore, with plans to resume fishing.
Local veterans from Sagada hoc and nearby towns attend Topsham Fair and returning to civilian life. Marvin Gilliam and Melville McKenney, both discharged, reside with local families while Pvt Ellis Wallace expects home soon after two years in France. Community members share visits and postwar updates across Bath and surrounding areas.
Sagadahoc County Superior Court began its October session with Justice Robert P Williamson presiding at 10 o clock. County Attorney Ralph O Dale asked the grand jury for indictments while the jurors were out at 2 30 p m. Miss Ruth Cogan spent the weekend with her parents on High Street and returned to her studies in Boston Sunday evening.
Rev. and Mrs. David L. Yale of Meriden Conn. completed a 2000 mile journey through New Brunswick the Gaspe region Maine Vermont and Massachusetts to celebrate their 46th wedding anniversary. They retraced river routes and coastal towns with autumn scenery praised by Mr Yale who says life begins at 80 and the trip improved his health and strength.
Harold P. Small of Small's garage Vine street, Pontiac Cadillac dealer, received word Monday from D. A. Bathrick, Pontiac division general sales manager, that production has started on Pontiac cars for domestic consumption. Small said a small number may be available to the public within a month.
