Bronze Birch Beetle Infestation Presses Maine Hardwood Industry
State Entomologist H B Peirson reports an extremely heavy bronze birch beetle outbreak sweeping Maine from New Brunswick. 55 percent of merchantable birch is dead or dying, prompting calls for newspaper ads to warn landowners and a push for funding. Peirson recommends clear cutting vulnerable stands and harvesting at-risk birch to curb the menace, noting sprays miss the beetle. The outbreak threatens a $20 million hardwood industry and many towns dependent on wood-using jobs.
