Fifty years after his apprenticeship W E Ingraham of Rockland returns to serve old customers on Wednesdays and Saturdays in a shop filled with antiques. The space displays a leather fire bucket from the first Rockland fire tub, a wooden clock, an old beaver hat and saddle bags from Ingraham’s ancestors, historic fire hats, a two wheel shay once owned by Dr Joseph Estebrook, and other relics undisturbed for decades. Dr Estebrook practiced in Camden for many years and was a classmate of Daniel Webster.
J M Hutchins catalogs Maine state valuations and tax rates from 1820 to recent years. State valuation rose from 20.96 million with a 0.19 percent tax rate in 1820 to 724.94 million with a 0.65 percent rate last year, while the highest 1864 rate was 0.8 percent. He notes wide town rates from 0.026 to 0.098 in the same county.
After thirty eight years of operation in Calais St Stephen Milltown Me and Milltown N B the line to be abandoned due to taxi and private auto competition. The company claims the competition has made the service untenable.
A crowd over 10,000 watched Bert Abbe defeat the State record pace at Tones fair on Thursday. The next meeting will be hosted by Mrs Kate Wallace and Mrs Hattie Nocton.
A new bus line operates between Brunswick and Yarmouth with a stop in Freeport. Trips depart Brunswick at 5.30, 6.30, 7.30, 9.30, 11.30 a.m., 1.30, 2.45, 3.45, 5.30, 7.30 and 9.30 p.m. From Yarmouth the departures are 6.30, 7.45, 8.15, 10.30 a.m., 12.30, 3, 3.30, 4.30, 6.30, 8.30 and 10.15 p.m.
An Augusta resident recalls a 30 year old episode where a boy ran a wire beneath house floors by using a cat as a passthrough. The tale, used to praise innovation and kindness to animals, led to the boy later becoming a successful Augusta garage proprietor.
Ft. Fairfield Review editor recalls driving at 35 mph when a huge truck loaded with potatoes sped past as if riding in a race. The piece hints that with the potato grower market reviving after hard years, drivers should slow down or risk accidents.
At a parish meeting the First Baptist Church extended a call to Rev. Morse of Brattleboro Vermont to fill the vacancy. Morse has visited the church twice and was warmly received. An annual dollar banquet and entertainment for church members is set for Tuesday Oct 29 with guests contributing a dollar in creative form.
Mrs Fernando Hutchins formerly Miss Thelma Oliver received a surprise miscellaneous shower last Wednesday at her parents home. Hosts Miss Edith Trott and Mrs Raymond Clark organized the event with games, music and a reception of gifts including silver, cut glass and embroidered items. A large group of relatives and friends from Portland and nearby towns attended, including the couple Mr and Mrs Fernando Hutchins.
The Genegs ta Past Matrons club met at Mrs. George W. Merrill’s home on Oak Street with hostesses including Mrs. Merrill and Mrs. Albion Corliss. A substantial supper preceded the business session which voted to entertain past patrons and spouses at a November 8 meeting. The next gathering is scheduled for December 13 with a committee chosen to plan.
The State Highway Commission settled the dispute by allocating about $6,000 from town and state aid funds to the Woolwich road from River and Middle roads junction to Sagadahoc Ferry. Engineers were present Friday to plan the work.
Captain Philip H. Doyen, 72, noted ship builder linked with steam lighterage for 40 years, died Friday in South Portland. A native of Troy, he helped construct three steamers for the Greek Government during the war. He leaves a widow, two daughters, and two sons, all of South Portland.

The Foundry and Machine Co of Bath cast a 16 ton steel offshore yacht keel for Pendleton boat builder at Wiscasset. The 94 foot Alexander auxiliary yacht in Portland is planned, with Rowe's lighter loading the enormous keel. Bath Iron Works may have cast a 17 ton keel, potentially surpassing this one.
Miss Louise Amanda Bonheimer daughter of Mr and Mrs Bert Bonheimer 137 Neal Street Bath becomes bride of Fred A Etter son of Mr and Mrs George Etter of Portland. The double ring service held at the bride’s home with Rev A Powell Davies officiating. The couple will reside in Portland after a brief honeymoon.
Ralph E. Wright and Ella M. Congdon married in a Wednesday evening ceremony at their new home 101 Dummer Street with Rev. Edwin Dodge Hardin officiating. The groom, a Navy veteran and 32nd degree Mason, works as a chauffeur. the bride, a Shaw’s book store employee, is daughter of William M. Congdon. They plan a 10 day trip to the White Mountains and Canada before settling at home.
Arthur Brown son of Mrs. Perry Thompson and Katherine London daughter of Mr and Mrs William London were married in a single ring ceremony at the Central Congregational church parsonage. Rev David I Wilson officiated. The groom, an Morse High School graduate, works at Bath Iron Works. The bride moved from Bangor two months ago. they reside at 41 Maple Street.
Mrs. Herbert W. Cutting of Phippsburg received a birthday surprise after a Dromore Grange meeting where she serves as chaplain. A supper followed with cake and coffee, a large birthday cake centerpiece, and a fruit basket presented by fellow members wishing her many happy returns. Portland visitors Mrs Allan M. Irish and Mrs Samuel R. Percy were in town Thursday.
The Traverse jury heard the Gammons vs Lebel case over tearing down a house and property return, with city represented by Edward W. Bridgham. Five other civil actions settled. Seven indictments yielded two trials. five defendants pled guilty, including Harold Young for breaking and entering, Alpheus Darling for multiple cottage thefts, Raymond Pottle for harassment with 30 day jail term, Nettie Pottle for similar charge with six months suspended, and Leslie Whitehouse for auto larceny with time served. Divorces granted in Bath cases. arrangements for alimony and child access noted.

Stanley Tobey, a Swift and Co truck driver, was acquitted of reckless driving in municipal court by Judge John J. Keegan. The case stemmed from a crash at Thompsons Corner that injured Mrs. Joseph Grace weeks earlier. testimony was delayed until Tobey testified Tuesday.
