Reception for Maine Veterans Commander Draws 200 in Red Men Hall

More than 200 people attended a reception in Red Men's hall honoring Maine Department Commander George O. Melzard hosted by T. W. Hyde Camp and Auxiliary. Speakers from G A R and women veterans groups praised Melzard as well as local leaders and auxiliary officers. Congress later approved a 2 million dollar upgrade to the Kennebec river channel from Bath to the ocean, tied to Bath Iron Works contracts and potential naval repair benefits.

Topsham Fair awards go to wartime youth exhibitors

At Topsham Fair 1940, ten clubs displayed 91 exhibits judged by Hubert Bowie and Mary Wright. Beans Juniors took prizes with Robert Davis and Billy Bowie. Garden Seniors saw Arthur Bowie win onions, with John Harrington and Ernest Melver among top juniors. Poultry and potatoes honors awarded to Bowdoinham and Durham entrants.

Young folks from two churches form united society

Central and Winter Street churches unite to launch a joint young people’s society. Bates College delegates John Tierney Kathleen Curry Carol Storm and Harriet White lead a social and dance at 7 p.m. Saturday in Central church parish house with local committee members coordinating. A Sunday meeting at 7 p.m. follows. High school and near-age youths are invited to attend and bring others.

Legal proceedings in Sagadahoc County courthouses heard

Cross actions between Frank MacFarlane and Stanley FE Wallace as principal and agent were heard by agreement of counsel before Associate Justice James H Hudson of the Supreme Court and Justice Raymond Fellows of the Superior Court in Sagadahoc county courtroom Tuesday. Women form Beacon Methodist Service Society
