October 6 to 12 marks Fire Prevention Week with a call for national participation. The message links fire safety to wartime production, noting higher fires risk as industry expands and stressing precautions against arson and sabotage to protect defense efforts.
An outstanding symbol of American honesty, the rural mail box stands unguarded in sparsely settled districts with few locks and many doors that fail to close. Despite exposure, only ten of over six million boxes were robbed in the last year, proving the box a nationwide emblem of trust and integrity.

Bowdoin track coach Jack Magee spoke at Hotel Sedgwick to Lions Club about his 1937 goodwill trip with Lin Wells. They showed motion pictures of 15 top track stars who faced Japan and other nations, sharing views on war haunted lands and peoples while urging motorists to watch for pedestrians with white handle red tipped canes indicating blindness. Duncan McInnes joined the club, with visiting Lions Fred C. Rundlett and Charles S. Ardrie.
Maurice K. Blaisdell of Bath and Maizie M. Wallace of West Point married Saturday night at Winter Street parsonage in a single ring ceremony led by Rev. Joseph O. Purdue. The couple will reside in Bath after a short wedding trip. he is an electrician at Bath Iron Works and she attended Yarmouth Academy.
Mr and Mrs Charles Joseph Donnell of 1003 Short Road Kalamazoo Michigan announce Sunday the engagement of their daughter Jane to Robert Lloyd Valentine Jermaine Sub Lieutenant Royal Canadian Navy son of Captain J L Jermaine Royal Canadian Navy and Mrs Jermaine of Vancouver and Quebec Miss Donnell is a granddaughter of the late Mr and Mrs Charles R Donnell of Bath Her parents resided in China a number of years and lived in Bath several years after their return to this country For the last five years they have lived in Kalamazoo and passed their summers at Popham Beach
West Bath grange hosts a public lobster salad supper at the grange hall on Friday night October 4. Supper is at 6 30 with card games to follow. Proceeds will fund painting of the hall. Tables may be reserved by calling the listed committee members.
Mrs Elnora Oliver of Boston is visiting the week with her sister, Miss Marion Dain, at 1268 Washington Street.
In Bremen the pointer Now Comes Sally owned by Rodney E. Ross of Hyde Windlass Co and Mrs Ross won the open all age stake at the Damari scotta Sportsmen's Club third dog field trial. Sally claimed the Frederic Ewing trophy after two wins, with 58 dogs entered and Runnerup Hum dinger's Roderick Chu owned by Dr T S Moise of Bangor.
There is a slump in Federal alien registration at Bath post office with only two registering on Wednesday and a total of 175 since the month long effort began. Officials urge early appearance during 4 to 8 p m periods, offering flexible times with advance notice to avoid late crowds and warn of a possible $1 000 fine or six months imprisonment for failure to register.
Herbert Loring Perry and Dorothy Gertrude Norton were wed Saturday at 7 45 in Winter Street parsonage with Rev. Joseph O Purdue officiating. The couple, who will reside in Phippsburg with Perry’s parents, plan a short wedding trip. Perry is a Morse High School 1936 graduate working at Bath Iron Works. Norton is Morse 1938 alumna.
The Maine Development Commission announced a new issue of Maine In Autumn. The booklet highlights fall travel and features color photographs on its covers. It includes a table listing tree species that color the Maine landscape in September and October.
A chimney fire at Ralph L. Palmer's Bay road North Bath residence near Merrymeeting bay was controlled with Engine 2 Engine 4 and a service wagon responding. Pony chemicals and a booster line from Engine 4 tackled the blaze despite remote hydrant access. Also notes residents visiting relatives in town.
After a 44 year run in Brunswick the Achelon family store named Abelon's Little White Store at 54 Maine Street ended with a sellout sale. Louis Abelon started in Bath before relocating to Brunswick in 1896 later moving to 54 Maine Street in 1906. His son Philip helped manage in recent years as owner ship of the building remains with Abelon while P. E. Hedges plans to lease the site for an auto supply business.
Miss Adelaide Pearson spoke on pottery to a Cosmopolitan club audience in Blue Hill following a Home Arts meeting. Despite rain, attendees learned about the Blue Hill pottery project, its Maine workers, and the clay sources. She displayed samples and shared travel films on Asiatic potters. she plans further films in Central America and Mexico.
The Bowdoinham Missionary Caravan joined Sunday services at West Harpswell Baptist Church. Mrs. Charles Durgin presided as president of the Women's Missionary Association. Woolwich delegates included Mrs. Sarah Bagley Wright, Miss Maude Thayer, Miss Ssaphene J. Dolloff, and Mrs. John M. Gowdy, who spoke on Burma Work, Alaska work, and the Children’s World Crusade respectively.
Spicer Cecil H. of 43 Edwards street and Miss Eleanor C. Schmidt of West New York N J were married Sept 21 by Rev Charles R Sims. Witnesses were Miss Priscilla Spicer and Howard Schmidt. The groom is son of Mr and Mrs Robert H Spicer Bath and the bride daughter of Mr and Mrs William H Schmidt West New York N J.
Leslie M. Underwood son of Mr and Mrs George H Underwood 627 Washington street and Pauline N Nyland daughter of Mrs Nina Nyland Peterboro NH and the late Fred Nyland were married Sept 22 in York by Lester W Frisbee notary public.

The Boston and Maine railroad posted August revenues up 3.3 percent or 124 833.41 under its revised debt structure, plus 301 614.16 toward contingent charges. Expenses rose 8.3 percent driven by maintenance costs. For the first eight months of 1940 the road reported income after fixed charges of 419 900, reversing 1939’s deficit.
Judge Harold W. Hurley of Boothbay Harbor opened a law practice in Bath on Front Street in the Lewis Wilson block. He will hold afternoon hours with evenings by appointment, mornings spent on Lincoln county court duties. Hurley, a Maine Law School graduate, served in the U S Army after 1917 and practiced in Boothbay Harbor before moving to Bath. He is married to Alice Beauchemin of Wareham, with a daughter Mary Lee, aged two and a half.
Mrs Mabel H Paquet Mrs Elizabeth M Trott and Mrs Nella S Stover served as delegates to the state convention of the W C T U in Bangor last week The local meeting featured Rev Charles H Berry as guest speaker and a social hour with refreshments served by several members Representatives came from Beacon Wesley Corliss Street Emmanuel Bible Assembly First Baptist and Church of the Nazarene The program included hymns scripture readings prayers duets and talks on temperance and missions led by Mrs Mayo and Mr Berry and closed with benediction by Rev Charles R Sims.

Roy Moore moves to a new home in West Bath near Stepping Stones. Mrs. John H. Hyde returns to Elmhurst after Boston trip with daughters Nancy and Sally, who are attending Garland School and Tenacre School respectively. The Hydes have moved into Sagadahoc Ferry. Mr. and Mrs. Price, after vacating Court Street, reside with Mr. and Mrs. Costello Hall until their new home is ready.
A 20-year-old Bathman pleaded guilty to intoxication and disturbing the peace in municipal court after running amuck in his home Friday. He was taxed $8.97 in costs. a separate charge for parking in front of a hydrant was filed. Police, who subdued him, reported paint spills and furniture damage at the scene near Bath Iron Works.
Mrs Ralph P Mank and others won prizes in contract as Mrs Henry T B Leeman hosted the Past Noble Grands club of Queen Esther Rebecca lodge at 13 Somerset Place. Mrs Roger W Pierce resigned as vice president and Mrs Herbert W McCabe was elected to the role. October meeting set with Mrs Leonard M Munsey and assisted by Mrs McCabe and Mrs Alfred H Bunker.
The Battery D Fund rose to 1383.50 on Tuesday afternoon as a 21 donation from Bath Iron Works carpenters and 6.50 from welders added to the total. Welders contributed 54.50, but 48 came from day shift workers. with 16.50 still needed to reach 1400, the funds will be turned over to Battery D.
A son born at Cornish Maternity Home 31 Getchell Street to Mr and Mrs Percy S MacGillvary Five Islands weighs eight and a half pounds named Keith Charles.

Frank A. Winslow associate editor of the Rockland Courier-Gazette spoke to Bath Rotary at Hotel Sedgwick on a topic titled Flirting with Fame. He named four presidents and many famous figures he interviewed, recalling Shiloh and Bath shipbuilding, and noted his 206th public talk as a testament to his prominence in journalism. J Wilson of Greenwich visited as a Rotarian guest.
Sagadahoc Pomona met Wednesday with Woolwich grange to discuss dahlia and gladioli bulb care, farmer income comparisons, and new farm product uses, followed by music, readings, and a moment of silence for the late Past State Master John E. Abbott. 83 members attended despite weather. next Pomona meeting is October 30 with Bodwell grange at Small Point. Mr and Mrs William Hynes returned from a week in Boston.
