The Virginia Democrat and Senate leader opposed waste and extravagance seen during and after World War I. He urged economy and taxpayer relief and called for retrenchment to cut unnecessary government staffing. His push found little administrative support, and employment totals rose after the armistice. The Graham committee later highlighted some waste.
Senator Miles Poindexter of Washington pins the Centralia massacre on lenient government deportation policy toward anarchists and Bolshevists. The meetings will be monthly through winter with women welcome.

Contracts for a modern 2500 seat theatre will be awarded soon and construction to start at once on the Deering property rear of the fire building at Congress and High streets in Portland. The project will include a four story structure with street shops and upper apartments and offices. The plan preserves nearby shops and lounges pending eventual enlargement, following a conference led by Alfred S. Black of Rockland with theatre owners from Maine Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

He reports progress as agencies for sale are placed with W B D Chase Co John J Desmond Co Thompson Bros Hallet Co Wilsons Charles A Harriman Swett s Front street store Leonard Mitchell and David T Perey & Sons among unions including war savings painters house carpenters ship carpenters machinists and clerks.
The annual fair presented a domestic drama with professional performances by Harold Hatledge Nate Cates Herbert Kavanaugh Pesky Tadane Bill Macclevers William Fields Davey Hildreth Edwin Haggett Silas Holcomb George Crockett Azariah Keep Karl Blaisdell Jennings Frank Hughes Hetty Heleamh Dorothy Crocker Isabel Carney Ruth Ward Joanna Hodgkins Alvira Ware Jillian Rogers Ann Tucker Hope Ward Pearl Lemont and more. Nelson's Orchestra provided massed music, with solos by Ruth Ward Dula Wright and a finale of Stars and Stripes ending in dancing pointers.
The funeral of Alvin Seidlinger was officiated at Central church. Pallbearers were four employees of the Brasn foundry at the Hyde Windlass Co. including Charles B. Seidlinger foreman. Harold Walker Fred Erhardt Frank Green and Lester Knight attended. Burial followed at Oak Grove.
Retail Merchants association of the Bath Chamber of Commerce met Thursday afternoon to set holiday closing days. The list includes New Year's Day Washington's Birthday Memorial Day Independence Day Labor Day Thanksgiving and Christmas with New Year's and Washington's Birthday newly added. Stores may stay open evenings before these holidays if not Sunday. Sundays closed all day. December no closing. Wednesday afternoons open. Saturday Monday Tuesday Wednesday evenings before Christmas. Stores close nightly except Saturdays and Wednesday at six and Saturdays at ten. Grocers exempt with their own schedule.
A. R. Pratt's chimney at 45 Chestnut Street was repaired to Chief Engineer Parks's satisfaction following a still alarm from the residence last week.
