Bud Reed of Waterville and Woolwich, once told by doctors his leg might be amputated, recovered after two and a half months in Bath Hospital. He returned to sports at Morse High School and Governor Dummer Academy, later joining Colby College where he excelled in football and hockey and was named All State defensive center. His father Carl Reed Sr. supported his rehabilitation through daily leg massages and active work to regain strength.

Woolwich Couple Surprised On 25th Wedding Anniversary
Mr and Mrs Clyde Baker of Woolwich celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a decorated cake bearing the inscription Congratulations on 25th Wedding Anniversary Mother and Dad. Family gathered in the evening including daughters and sons in law Barbara and Robert Coombs and Virginia and Norman Kenney. Their four sons and two daughters include Robert G Baker in the US Air Force stationed in Omaha and Fred L Baker at Thule Air Base Greenland. Mrs Baker, formerly Evelyn Buffington of New London Connecticut, is active in local groups. Mr Baker has worked at Bath Iron Works for over 20 years and is a Mason with multiple lodge affiliations.

Terry-Lee Wade, daughter of Dr and Mrs Earl L Wade of Front Street, a first grader at North Primary, was hit at Washington near North Street Monday noon. She was taken to Bath Memorial hospital and discharged an hour later. Police said she darted in front of a car driven by Dale Drost, 17, Morse High School sophomore.

Civil Air Patrol Conducts Sunday Rescue Drill Across State
Civil Air Patrol ground units from Brunswick Saco Old Orchard Sanford Springvale and Skowhegan conducted a Sunday search and rescue drill amid poor weather. Ground teams found a simulated downed pilot near Gray within an hour and provided on-site medical care before transport to a field hospital.

Carlton Bridge Anniversary Marks Quarter Century
The Carlton Bridge in Bath and Woolwich celebrated its twenty fifth anniversary with state officials led by Governor Ralph Owen Brewster in attendance. Senator William F. Carlton, long advocate of the project, was hailed as the Father of the Carlton Bridge as ribbon cutting by Geraldine Stott opened the toll free span. The event featured a luncheon at the Y M C A and a toll free period starting in 1941.

Progress on South End Sewer Construction Advances
Donald W. Leavitt a Woolwich contractor has completed laying pipe from Middle Street to the east edge of Washington Street for a sewer extension at Gahans bridge area. City Highway department crews are building manholes along the line and several hundred feet of asphalt treated metal pipe remain to be laid through the flats to the Kennebec river low water mark. The work, long needed, proceeds mostly during low tide as the area floods several feet with incoming tides.

LST 1156 Undergoes Navy Official Trials At Bath
The LST 1156 built by Bath Iron Works left for three day Navy official trials after builder’s trials. It stayed at State Pier in Portland during the tests with a Navy trial board aboard. Commissioning is set for Bath Iron Works Friday at 10 30 with ceremonies, a first for the local yard.
