Pulpwood Season to End Thursday in Bath
Fifteen thousand cords of pulpwood arrived from Canadian provinces for Bath operations. Barges from J. C. Mulligan Stevedoring Co. will empty two barges with 350 cords each at the Maine Central Railroad wharf for Pejepscot Paper in Topsham. The off season yielded 3,000 cords less than typical, mostly from Salmon River with some from St. Martin’s. Tug Foremost 43 waits to discharge and depart for Saint John after noon Thursday. The season ran since May, employing about 20 workers and boosting local payroll, with uncertain prospects for next winter amid foreign competition.

Checks surround mystery after Bath painter’s death
Deputy Sheriff Frank Carver in Topsham found three $5,000 checks made out to Charles H. Johnson from a defunct Bath firm Swanton Jameson Co. The checks, dated August and September, bear the signature E. H. Hill and were tied to a Boston attorney note. The case remains unclear as to Johnson’s finances and the purpose of the checks. Johnson died after a fall in Rumford Hospital following a long period of wandering, with funeral services planned at West Bowdoin cemetery.
