Local fuel dealers report adequate supply of fuel oil and coal for most homes despite rationing and possible shortages in chestnut or nut coal sizes. Substitutes like pea coal mixed with nut coal are recommended where needed. A Bath Navy officers reception at U S C Hall highlighted community wartime spirit with prominent local officials in attendance.
More than 200 attend the annual parish supper at Winter Street Congregational Church. Dr Langdon T Snipe is elected moderator and John Taylor becomes clerk. Eight new members elected, church debt reduced to about 2500 dollars, with goals to repay notes and support community service.
Citizens at Kelley field and city officials debate plans to turn the Kimball tract on Lincoln Street into a proper athletic park. After donor John R. Newell gifted the land and $2,000 remained for surveys, progress stalled amid gate damage and field access issues. Local tensions rise over odor from the city dump and repeated field vandalism as calls grow for a secured, functional facility for next season.
The Huse Memorial School opening was postponed as contractors await a federal release before city transfer. Washington officials have not yet provided the release, delaying sessions by a few days while the platoon system continues to serve Huse pupils.
The Bath Lions club met at Rock Hill Inn for a weekly gathering with a chicken dinner and coffee. Chief speaker Lt. R. E. Furry of the US Navy urged hospitality to naval personnel in Bath and discussed wartime attitudes and service. New member Herbert Pierce joined. Lion Alec McDonald announced a joint Lions and Lionesses dance planning meeting for Dec. 4 at the State Armory. LeRoy Recktor departs for San Diego on 15 days leave after convoy duty in the Caribbean.
Dean Paul Nixon of Bowdoin College addressed the second of eight Community Evening Forums at Central Church at 7 30 pm He argued against a view that personality is fixed by age five or six and said change continues through adolescence and life He cited Bowdoin case histories showing influence from secular and religious forces with religion as a potent factor Next week Rev Ernest Lynch of First Parish Portland will speak.
The Bath Rotary Club met at Hotel Sedgwick Tuesday noon after a two week break due to vacation staffing. President Jud Miller led the meeting and proposed taking charge of a USO program, plus a drive to donate furniture for soldiers at a nearby post. Rotarians Dr. E. G. A. Stetson and Jack Stimpson of Brunswick attended.
Mr. and Mrs. George Perry of Maple Street and Mrs. William Robson of Western Avenue died Monday in Portland, according to local notices.
Governor Sewall appoints a ten member Maine Apprenticeship Council to guide state apprenticeship training. Five employer representatives from Bath Iron Works, Oxford Paper, Saco-Lowell, Lockwood, and a Portland plumber join five from unions and worker groups led by Bath Iron Works and textile, electrical, machinist, and CIO locals. The council aims to stimulate interest, set standards, and cooperate with federal and state bodies to advance skilled trades training.
Hyde Windlass Co purchased the Meeker heirs property on Washington street, including the mansion and outbuildings. Miss Charlotte Meeker died at 92. The company plans to demolish the house, use the northern lot for parking, and keep the southern lawn as a small park before building a new office nearby.
Local civilian defense officials report three electrically operated sirens to supplement existing alarms. One at Warren A. Parris home in the north end, one at Attude Park Perrace, and a third likely on a Winnegance school building in the south end. Sirens will be run by district sector wardens to improve coverage.
