Readable ledger items from 1820s Castine Maine show prices and wages including Willian Foster’s 100 dollar yearly salary as clerk and daily shipyard wages. Ledger lists groceries such as turkeys beef chicken rum and butter with prices and dates from 1822 to 1828.
A ledger was found among a storekeeper’s effects revealing prices such as fibur at 8.75 a barrel and sugAra agar at 40¢ a gallon. The document surfaced when the storekeeper’s belongings were searched. It was shown to a nonfamily member during a September visit by Mr. Adams of Atlantic in Burlington, Vermont.
Henry W Howard presided over a dinner at Spaulding hotel, one of Baths newest boarding houses formerly the Mallett property. Purchased in February by Spaulding, it was expanded in March by 25 rooms and now serves over 50 roomers with hundreds fed daily. A Monday dinner set a brisk pace with 283 served in 35 minutes.
Mrs Martha Isadora Small 87 widow of Orrington J. Small died Saturday night at her son ex Mayor John A. Small’s home 766 Middle Street. Born June 2 1832 in Oldtown she lived in Bath for over 60 years. She leaves her son two daughters seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Walter A. Noyes aged 28 died Sunday at his parents home on 5 Dike Road after a several week illness. He worked with his brother Chaney Noyes of Portland in a vulcanizing business and had only recently moved to Bath. He leaves his wife and infant son, his grandmother Mrs. R. C. Gray, and his brother Herbert Noyes of Bath.
At the city clerk's residence on Walker street May 17, William J. Willette and Clara Eaton both of Bath were married. The groom, son of the late Stephen Willette, works as an iron worker. The bride, daughter of the late Franklin Eaton, is from Bath.
A United States marshal visited the Tug Sea King, long used to tow barges to the Kennebec, a day before the vessel sailed from Boston to a Virginia port. Officers captured 900 pints of whisky intended to relieve drought in Virginia, valued at 1800 dollars in Boston and double that in Virginia.
