Food prices steady as wages rise boost family buying power
Paul S. Willis of the Grocery Manufacturers of America argues the 1959 grocery basket costs about the same as in 1952. Americans now need fewer hours to earn the basket, with 40 hours versus 51 in 1952, while incomes are higher and food quality improves through modern, time saving products. He notes that 23 percent of income goes to food, a share similar to two decades ago, and urges focus on labor hours required rather than dollar cost.
