Milton H. Rubin of the American Silk Council tells the Tariff Commission that raising tariffs may save U S silk mills without harming Japan. Imports soared 364 percent 1955–58 while domestic production fell 42 percent. Japan sold 7.4 million pounds of raw silk in 1955, 4.5 million in 1958.
A Manufacturers Trust Company leaflet argues the dollar’s strength ties to a sound national economy. It warns deficit spending hurts every dollar, erodes savings and life policies, and urges voters to demand economical government living within its means to prevent currency degradation.
An 18 year old Shirley ONeill saved a drowning companion after a great white shark attack off San Francisco. She baptized the injured man and a Carnegie Medal of Honor may be pursued for her bravery. The piece contrasts heroic youth with rising delinquency.

A busy Sunday at Second Baptist Church featured Rev. Ernest Roberts's sermon The Coming of Christ. The column lists numerous visits, cottage stays, and social gatherings around Five Islands including families from Bath Milo Westbrook and Richmond with mentions of fire protection talks, a laymen meeting and Memorial Day cemetery visits.
The Morse High School class of 1949 completes plans for its tenth reunion. Events include an Alumni Banquet in the Morse gym on Saturday June 6 at 6 30 p m with attendees meeting in room 207 at 6 15 p m sharp. A post banquet party at Bath Country club follows and a pre banquet gathering is set for 5 p m at the home of Mrs John Parke Allen 38 Trufant Street. Memorial flowers honor deceased members Carl Langbehn and Doreen Willis Alpert. Guests include Mr and Mrs David Y Alkazin, the class faculty advisor.
Bath’s handtub enters the first muster of the season to be held in Salem Massachusetts on Saturday. The tub will compete from the top position among 19 entrants under New England League rules. It will be loaded Friday night and leave Bath at 5 am Saturday with volunteers welcome to help.
Invitations have been received for the wedding of Dorothy June Edwards daughter of Mr and Mrs Wayne E Edwards of Indwell NY and Kenneth Jolmes Young on June 20 at the Indwell Methodist church. Mr Young is a Bay Point Summer colony member and nephew of Mr and Mrs Robert Miller. Louisa Howard business visitor in Bath with Mrs Emery Rideout. Various residents visit or stay at cottages and ongoing repairs noted across Bay Point and surrounding towns.
A sixth grade girl and boy at Dike school received the annual Kendall Trust Fund awards for the greatest improvement in character scholarship and physical development. Michael Rousse and Jane Thurston won eight dollar cash prizes presented by Superintendent Loring R. Addison. they were named from James Collins' grade six by faculty selection.
The Women's Society of Christian Service at Beacon Street Methodist church installed officers during a Monday evening ceremony after a banquet at the Stowe House Brunswick. New officers include Maynard Leach president and Paul Avery vice president with a slate of secretaries and assistants. The group planned a strawberry festival for summer, knitting and craft projects for the Christmas fair, and a seasonal reshuffle into working groups. David Potter, a University of Maine junior, will spend the summer with his parents in West Bath.
Mr and Mrs Sanford B Nickerson of Park Street are spending the week at Moosehead on a fishing trip.
Ralph H. Stinson 81 longtime machinist at Hyde Windlass died Monday at Bath Memorial Hospital. Born April 18 1878 in Arrowsic he was son of John and Elizabeth Raiden Stinson. He lived most of his life in Arrowsic later in Damariscotta survived only by cousins. His wife Mabel Heath Stinson died in 1942.
A high mass was sung at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Marys Roman Catholic church for Fabien B. Paulin. Rev. Francis E. Morrissey officiated. Bearers were Clifford White Jr, Charles Comeau, Peter Paulin, David Comeau, Thomas Brewer and Kenneth Paulin. Interment followed in Calvary cemetery family lot.
